This is a long book, made longer by the creators of Calvinism making simple ideas as complex as possible. Rewriting definitions of words. And as self contradictory as possible. It could have never arisen in an era where concordances and accurate dictionaries were available. At nearly every point, Calvinism requires you to hold two or more opposing beliefs at the same time. Example: God chooses who will be saved, you have no input into this, the choice is based on nothing connected to you in any way, you do not have any say in the matter. But it is entirely your fault if you are not saved. God chose, before the first stone of Earth is laid, what sins you will commit, when you will do them, word for word how you will think of how to do them. (But while dictating each and every sinful thought word and deed, God is not the author of sin!) Although God allows you no choice in any way to do anything else, He is perfectly right to send you to hell for eternity for obeying His impossible to disobey script. Why? Because He can! Four of the five points of Calvinism (actually it is more like a dozen points) are rewritten ideas from the Bible. One doesn’t even exist in the Bible. Total Depravity. Man is separated from God by his sins. Yes, biblical doctrine. But Total Depravity where it is impossible for people to hear or read the gospel message and choose to respond is not. Unconditional Election. Election, God choosing a group like the Jews, or even a single person like a prophet, to serve Him in some way, is very biblical. The choice mentioned above, God choosing who is saved and who is damned with nothing to do with the person, is not. Limited Atonement is so obviously not biblical – not mentioned in even one verse - even the majority of Calvinists don’t accept it, choosing to be 4, 3, 2, or even 1 point Calvinists instead. Irresistible Grace. Sad to say, while grace is biblical, loads of people do resist it. Perseverance of the saints. No, the bible says Jesus preserves those who come to Him. Thus due to the doublespeak and contradictory nature of Calvinism, it is not hard (as the author found) at all to find lots quotes of Calvinists not only contradicting each other, but themselves!

he Other Side of Calvinism, written by Laurence M. Vance is a monumental work written on the subject of Calvinism. One of the first points made is that Calvinism has “masqueraded as sound doctrine for much too long.” (Vance ix) Vance as a purpose does not designate the last statement; however, it seems, that in this book Vance determines to undermine the history, theology, philosophy, and men who are responsible for current day Calvinism. Many direct quotations and excerpts from historical church documents pervade the book. The book is well cited; Vance is well read, and has included in his book many pages of bibliography. He has no stone left unturned and provides readers with a strong argument against the false teachings of CalvinismIn the preface, Vance identifies a few of his purposes in writing the book. Although there is a great deal of writing on this subject, most authors primarily argue from a reformed or Calvinistic view. Calvinism is becoming increasingly popular. Vance argues that Calvinism is dangerous and can distort one’s view on other practical and doctrinal issues. He claims that, “Calvinism is…the greatest “Christian heresy” that has ever plagued the church.” The teachings of Calvinism are heretical, but the “greatest Christian heresy” may be a slight exaggeration. (Vance x)Vance informs his readers that the book will not be written from a neutral position. He justifies this approach by reminding readers that the “other side”, writes in the same manner. This approach is fine; after all, a reader rarely approaches a book from a neutral position. It is understood that his ultimate purpose is, “to show that Calvinism is beyond all doubt not the teaching of the Bible nor of reason…Vance’s attempt is to prevent the spread of Calvinism.” (Vance xi)Vance begins in the first chapter with an introduction to Calvinism. He takes this opportunity to inform readers how Calvinists perceive themselves, and how they perceive what Calvinism defines in Scripture. His conclusion to this matter is that Calvinism identifies itself with Biblical Christianity. Some Calvinists even refer to their theology as the Gospel. He provides a brief history of Calvinism. This history includes the names of men who have identified themselves with Calvinistic and Hyper-Calvinistic theology. Readers are made aware that Calvinist leaders have come from Baptist, Presbyterian, and Reformed religious background.Vance takes some time to explain the origin of Calvinism by referring to church history. This explanation is a very important part of the book because it lays the foundation for Calvinistic thinking. Vance discusses the Catholic Church, and Augustine. Many of the tenets of Calvinistic teaching originated with Augustine. Augustine had a great influence on Calvin. The personal lives and teachings of both Calvin and Jacob Arminius are taught in great detail. It appears that both men thought similarly, this piece of history is commonly unknown. Likewise the teachings of both men have expanded beyond their original intent and teaching.Vance discusses “TULIP”, the acrostic that is foundational to the theology of the Calvinist; he makes a great effort explaining the origin of this acronym. There are some who will not accept all five points. Vance spends a great deal of time discussing the history and controversy of how these points became so important to Calvinist thinkers. A familiarity with history is helpful for the reader to better understand this complicated information. Vance’s decision to begin the book with detailed historical information is what makes this work significant. Several books have been written on the subject of Calvinism, but few are written from a historical point of view.Much of the book is dedicated to the explanation and refutation concerning each point of the “TULIP”. Vance does a great job of explaining what each letter represents. He pulls direct quotes from Calvinists through the ages and responds accordingly. Each point he refutes with credible and frequent Scripture passages.Whether or not Vance fulfills his purpose, one will never know. The inclination is that few Calvinists will read this book. One could never really know if the book will successfully change people’s minds on the subject. The book is filled with detailed information, including quotes, confessions, and Scripture. While all of this is great information the book may have been better if some of the information was excluded. Perhaps a series, or a two-volume work would have been better. The closer I became to finishing, the harder it became to read and concentrate on the subject. Vance is well read and used plenty of sources. Yet, it was his massive bibliography that became frustrating. Footnotes would have been better; it was a real task to look up each quote, there are so many. Ironically, what is most impressive about the book became a frustration while trying to intently read.

This book more than meets what I expected. The amount of documentation from the pens of those being refuted is astounding, and does confirm what I have actually learned in my research, finding mine was minimal compared to what Mr. Vance relates.

Helpful in understanding Calvinism. John 3:16 also stands against it.

Laurence Vance has produced a masterful polemic against what is commonly called Calvinism.Vance goes into the history of Calvinism and the 5 points of TULIP and expertly and scripturally refutes these points. Most of the reviewers who gave the book low marks are, no doubt, Calvinists themselves (or have Calvinistic leanings) so it is no wonder that they rated it as such.But any theological system must be consistent and when Calvinism is taking to its "logical" ends, it ends up contradicting itself and Scripture at the same time. Vance demonstrates this masterfully.In fairness however, Vance has his share of problems when explaining some of the topics in the book. And sometimes his arguments shed more heat than light.Overall, it is a good read and goes into the Calvinistic system, showing it for what it is: a man-made philosophical and logical system. A system that attempts to view the "mountain" of theology from its base at only one "Calvinistic" angle, while authoritatively decreeing what the summit looks like based upon this limited view.It may not convince an ardent Calvinist to change their mind (only the Holy Spirit can do that) but it does contribute to the debate in a scholarly way.

But our confidence in our shrewdness, in our education, in our talents, in some aspect or other of our self-assured self; is our own undoing. Very informative for single source for photograph history and critique. I particularly like reading the book in Kindle software because it allows me to Google photographer images directly from the text.I would recommend this book to any aspiring photographer.

This book is a must have. It should be in every University library and on every individual's bookshelf. Why does a photographer want an education, formal or otherwise? Alone, there are so many quotable statements here and although there is some referencing, the view points from an eclectic group of experts are priceless.

This book has essays on photography by famous photographers in the mid-20th Century. An excellent read for anyone interested in the history of photography.

Esoteric... at best.

Solid and thorough writing

This book contains articles written by many photographers and critics. As a result there is a wide variety of quality.

Excellent collection of extracts and excerpts from established photographic practitioners, essayists, and educators, a great book for a beginner's photography course. Touches on a number of related issues including the image-making process, the role of photography in the arts and society, photography criticism, fundamentals of successful art practice, and the role and function of the educator, among others. Weaknesses of this collection include several frustratingly short extracts, the absence of images to support or exemplify the text, and the near total absence of opinion from anywhere outside the borders of the USA.

If a photographer might think that a picture is worth 10,000 words, why would one need a book of words about photography? Wouldn't a few well chosen photographs have obviated the need for this book? Probably not, because the aforesaid major premise is probably wrong, or at least overstated. There are some concepts that are so complex that they can't be expressed in pictures. That presumably was the thought of the editors.In his introduction Charles Traub, who is the chair of the School of Visual Arts' department devoted to photography, says that the world of photography has changed in recent years and that the writings included in the book are designed to prepare the fine arts student to enter into the world of contemporary photography. In order to do this the authors have divided the book into four parts: "Reflections on the Medium: What It Means to Photograph; How Others See Them: Considering the Photographer; Finding an Audience: Working with the Professionals; and Guide for the Uneducated: Higher Education and Photography. Each Section contains several short essays ranging from less than a half page to 11 pages. Although the editors disavow any idea of providing photographic instruction, the piece by Henri Cartier-Bresson comes the closest to instruction. On the other hand, the piece by Dave Eggers, in which he describes the thoughts running through the mind of a young women waiting to take a gritty but artistic photograph might be interesting to a creative writing student, and while a bit of fun, does not seem to be useful to a photographer. The interview with Charlotte Cotton, a museum photography curator, seemed the most accurate and insightful description of the current photographic art market. For me the most useful piece was an outline of how to critique a photograph by Ralph Hattersley.The Amazon star system is not useful in the evaluation of a book like this. The readings in this book are a mixed bag. I suspect that most photographers, including those earning a living from their work, will find little to benefit them here, although they may find some of the articles of interest. On the other hand, for the individual earning a Master of Fine Arts in Photography, and interested in entering into the contemporary art photography market, the essays may prove useful.If they have not done so already, those who want to read more about photography, with an emphasis on its history as well as its philosophy might do better to read an old classic, "Photography in Print: Writings from 1816 to the Present" by Vicki Goldberg.

This book is definitely an eye-opener. Chapter 5 When We Ignore Unethical Behavior is my favorite chapter and helped me realize why I and other people often just excuse or let unethical behavior go without challenge. While some of the things in this book could be debated, it also offers a lot of great explanations and gives a different perspective to ethics. Readers can immediately relate this back to their own lives or the lives of people they know due to the understandable explanations the book gives to its main sections. I would suggest that people read this book because it will help them realize that they could do better then what they're doing now , even if they're doing good. This book helped my realize my own short comings as a person and that I want better people in my life.

I found the book useful and helpful, but overall, it's a bit difficult to get a wealth of help from two authors who agree there are no core ethics that people need to follow - that what's right is relative.Yet look at every society across the ages and you'll see that no matter where (or when) you do, things like honesty and integrity are valued, and lying and stealing are bad.Still, the book had some good points and helpful questions.

You are not as ethical as you think you are. That is the basic message from behavioral ethicists of this book. It's an interesting mix of cognitive research with anecdotes on why it is that people in business do unethical things. An easy read for the most part, but with plenty of substance. Can be a bit redundant. Really good for people who want to understand why, despite their best intentions, we still end up making mistakes and doing things we know are unethical, even after the fact. Recommended.

Interesting read! I purchased it for a business class and enjoyed reading it.

Even if I wasn't in a business ethics class, I would consider reading this book. It is very insightful and allows the reader to uncover the ethical blind spots between how ethical you think you are and how ethical you actually are. A learning experience.

Worn out by intense preaching and prayer, he died in 1716 and was canonized by Pope Ven. Pius XII in 1947.

This book and the ideas it contains have been fully accepted, approved and promoted by the Universal Church. You would do yourself and the world a great service to take up this book with an open heart and mind. According to this book consecration to Jesus through Mary is one of the surest, fastest and easiest way to become a saint.

I wanted to know what the history of the Holy Rosary was. I had no idea. This is one of the books I bought to find out. Completely deserves 5 stars. Buy it. It's not that expensive and will greatly enrich you, which is in itself a sign of divine truth.

Excellent paperback version of Louis de Montfort's original work with some supplementary materials. It was great to renew my Marian consecration with this book (after using the Fr Gaitley version and others). However, it's not laid out like a 33-day prep, more just de Montfort's explanations of the devotion and why it's good.

I loved this book and I recommend it to anyone who wants to be closer to our mother Mary. Thank you. JoAnn.

Eric Wiberg is a mariner and licensed maritime lawyer from the Bahamas. A nautical historian with six other non-fiction books published, he studied at five universities in three countries, including at Oxford. I recently had a chance business meeting with Eric Wiberg. I could sense that he had a story to tell and indeed he did."Round the World in the Wrong Season" is a 'stream of consciousness' narrative - loose in editing, long in substance. Jack Kerouac taped together hundreds of pages of paper, imbibed enough drugs to keep him awake for several days, and sat down to memorialize the Beat Generation, in "On The Road." In a sense, Eric's book does something similar for his generation. At first the reader is reluctant to have any sympathy for the young man from a yacht-racing Bahamian family with a Greenwich, CT girlfriend. Then - as his journey around the world starts - you realize that what you had thought were his advantages, were really demons that the he was battling as he sought his transition to manhood. Eric knew from the first time he cast off the lines on "Stornoway" that his feelings for his college sweatheart, Margaret, were not going to survive the voyage. He could sense that when he returned to the Bahamas, his relationship with his family would be different. So began his right of passage under the guardianship of "Stornaway"'s mercurial owner Chris Treahy, who would hide that fact that he was terminally ill until near the end of the voyage.There is no vanity in this story. Appropriately, there is self-deprecating humor. Late in the book, Eric thanks the reader for their patience, citing "the conference of...two gripping fevers (of youth)- passion and ignorance." There is no need to apologize. As George Bernard Shaw said - "Youth is wasted on the young."
