I initially got this for animation school, but I've found that I've been using it even after I got out. Being a freelancer, I'm always questing out for knowledge and cutting-edge views - but back in the day when Disney was just getting its animated little paws on the ground, the guys behind everything were really doing something that would shake the cinematic world to its core. This book is a great reflection on the history, educational points and workings of animation, offering a lot of great advice for anyone in or out of school for it, and maybe even the passionate fanatic.That being said, it's no wonder that this was a must-have in class. It's pretty wild that my school depended on this and only a couple of other books to teach our classes. In the end, animation's really about how much time and experience you have with it, but... If you wanna up your game in the field, this is one of the best books out there I can think of.Good luck out there, guys!

Wow what a whopper of a book. I really enjoyed “The Magic Behind the Voices” a who’s who of animated character vocals – and this book on Disney animation seemed like a great follow up. It was. It was for me also surprisingly BIG, and at well over 500 pages a big effort to actually read.I read this for the history with no intention of becoming an animator. However my doodles have improved a lot since I've been reading this.I didn’t grow up with Disney movies. When I was a kid in the 70’s Disney was in kind of a slump with their animated films. I even remember reading something somewhere about how they would never get back the old magic. But I was still affected by Disney. I was in their “Record Club” for a short while. We also somehow had little plastic Disney character figures to play with (Kids - this was before Wal-Mart and China and the Internet) I still got to see Disney Illustrations everywhere and imagine the movies that were so famous in our culture.Then later when Disney got it’s magic back (after this book was written) I went out on a date with a girl to see Beauty and the Beast. And then got married to that girl and we lived happily ever after. And we had kids that grew up with Disney on video. So I got to see what I missed. Thank you Disney you have made my life a dream come true! Ok it wasn’t all you.Anyway about the book . . . It’s great history. Walt Disney doesn’t actually invent anything . . . but his workers do and he creates a whole new industry and world looking for magic . . . that “golden moment” that takes an audience to another place and leaves them feeling good. The book is extremely well written, wonderfully illustrated . . . but will cost you part of your life to read word for word.I think the lessons learned in animating are good lessons for life. Look for what is inspirational and moving. Creative teamwork can bring results no one imagined. Keep moving, and keep people engaged. Make something beautiful that people feel a part of. The character and the story are the driving and meaningful factors.So I feel happy and sad. Sad because maybe deep down I thought there was some real magic in Disney. Happy though, that the magic they were going for was after all, life. And life is pretty special.

I heard wonderful things about the book through other professionals and peers in the industry, that is the reason I was so eager to get the book. It has lived up to all the hype! The book is an absolute MUST HAVE for anyone who is fascinated with animation and it's history. I love that so much of the book is dedicated to the history of animation, the authors trace the roots of the modern Disney style all the way back to the beginning. It is a treasure trove of priceless knowledge and experience, Fantastic book!

This book is Amazing! It brings you into the process of Disney creation that is helpful for creating your own animated stories. I recommend this book for Animators of all levels. By the way it Huge and Heavy! Nice to put on coffee table.

Ordered this for my husband, who is going to school to be an animator. He has always been a huge Disney fan, but when he took his animation class this semester his professor suggested this book. It wasn't a must for class but it is everything they will be going over. It was a lot bigger than we thought it would be, but it is exactly what he wanted. I don't think he's put it down since we recieved it. Definitely a must have for anyone interested in animation!

The amount of love/care that went into this book by two of Disney's nine oldest bastards cannot be quantified. This book goes beyond explaining the rudimentary squash/stretch/timing you probably learned in animation class. This book explores the early problems these artists came across when doing exactly what animation is designed to do: breathe life into a sequence of drawings... and trick the audience into feeling sentiment for what is essentially an optical illusion. The anecdotes Frank and Ollie give highlight the earliest challenges in creating a convincing illusion, and, probably the most invaluable to any aspiring animator, they detail what they all did to fix them.My only qualm with the book is that it is bulky/heavy. It would be great if there was a way to make it smaller to carry around as a tool rather than a coffee table book.

As someone without an art/animation background, I still find this book a must-have for any Disney enthusiast. The comprehensiveness of topics covered by authors/animators, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, is unbelievable. Concepts that the casual Disney animated film viewer would take for granted are explored in-depth. The history of Disney animation is also explored and is just fascinating. Of course, the artwork is beautiful as well.

This is the Redis book I have read EVERY page. The examples are very useful. I hope the author can include more examples and write the 2nd edition for the latest Redis development!

Great book for both high-level overview and in-depth details. I benefited from the high-level overview of various topics and my development team benefited from practical code examples that got right to the point of each topic.

I am a software developer, and I found that the author has a very different background than me, maybe system administrator or a hardware engineer. Many things he is talking about make no sense to me, while the questions I am interested in are not answered. I am interested mostly in the properties of Redis data structures, while the author talks mostly about memory, disks and locking. At first I read this book with Google, looking for the answers in Redis specification, but then stopped reading the book at all. For me it is not too useful, and pretty unclear.

I was really excited to get this book and review all the topics included, but it ends up a not so great experience because of all the confusing bits and pieces of code which are parachuted without enough comments and explanations, making it much harder and less effective to follow.

Before I get into it, I really don't know what C. Collomb is talking about. At least 75% of the code in the book includes comments. Want to see for yourself? Read and download the example source code at the book's Github repository: [...] . There is uncommented Java code, but the Python in the repository is what is in the book.Now that that's out of the way, I've been a pretty heavy user of Redis for the last few years as part of my job, and have been programming with Python over a half-dozen years. Given my experience, most of chapters 1-4 were too basic for me, but at least the book got me used to the way Josiah writes.There were a few interesting topics in chapters 5 and 6, but I really think the author hits his stride in chapter 7 with searching. He pulls together a few different topics from earlier in the book to basically build an ad server with Redis. He leaves the reader with a full page listing of how to make the ad server better, which at least got me thinking, even though I hate ads.I wasn't interested in chapter 8's social network buildout, and the section on the streaming API probably shouldn't have even been there (it's more Python than Redis). But in chapter 9 he brings it all back together and shows how you can cut memory use in about half of the situations that I've at least come across. Then in chapter 10 he continues on the scaling side of things, again bringing up older examples.We finally get a taste of Lua scripting in chapter 11, where Josiah revisits even more previous problems. I really think that chapter 11 should have been longer, because there are a lot more interesting problems out there that Lua solves. And I wasn't interested in the sharded lists, but I guess it completes the reduced-memory sharding of structures he started in chapter 9.If I were a new Redis user, I would give this book a 5. There is gradual buildup through the first few chapters in preparation for the more intermediate and advanced topics later on. Some of the earlier problems are a bit contrived, but it will get a new Redis user asking the right questions. If you aren't a Python user, some of the code might be a bit tough to work through, but it's a lot easier (and shorter) than if the book was in Java.As a more advanced user of Redis, I wanted more of the advanced topics, but Josiah covered enough interesting problems to make it a worthwhile read. I'd consider this a solid 4, maybe 4.5 for a more advanced user, but I'm going to give it a 5 just because it is so much better than anything else out there for documenting best practices with Redis and covering topics that you just can't find anywhere else.

Redis is frequently compared to the likes of memcached and referred to as a "key value" store. This doesn't do it justice. The various data structures, it's atomic operations and pub/sub make this a viable replacement for queues, ESBs, caches and even databases.To really utilise redis some creative thinking is needed and this is where Redis in Action comes in.A well structured, well written book that covers pretty much every use case of redis in plenty of detail. It's nice to see a book not shy away from tackling the more challenging use cases for redis.The first 6 chapters are what I would consider foundation topics - whilst still very useful (like caching, logging & distributed locking) chapter 7 is where it starts to get interesting. As an aside chapter 4 is very useful and deals with configuring and working with redis to minimise the chance of data loss. It felt a bit odd that it was in the first part of the book, generally chapters focusing on configuration go towards the end of a book - not that it matters, just seemed odd!Chapter 7 onwards start to deal with interesting challenges in real world applications. By building out an Ad Server and social network the author tackles issues such as how to model none trivial data and relationships, index data and search/sort/filter.Chapters 9 & 10 deal with performance tuning and scaling redis. Some of the tips in here are worth the cost of the book alone if you're planning on using redis at scale.Chapter 11 covers how lua can be used to optimise performance. By reworking some of the earlier examples the author achieves a 20x performance improvement against the original autocomplete implementation. On future projects I'll be looking at using lua to speed things up.In summary this is a significant book that's well worth the price. Recommended.The code samples in the book are in python but java (and work in progress node) versions are available here: [...]

Nowadays when you say "lady" you think "weak and too proper". Or I do. So I was not expecting much from this book, just because of its title. I was wrong. There is nothing 'weak and too proper' about Isabella Bird, whose travels in the Colorado Rockies in the late 19th century, before there were roads and ski lifts an all the other conveniences we take for granted, completely captivated me. It is stunning to be a Coloradan surrounded by 'civilization' now, and realize how recently this truly was frontier; even more stunning to find a woman on a horse exploring it on her own, stopping with homesteaders or miners or mountain men, and going on usually all by herself, facing whatever the weather and wild terrain have to offer. I have been adventuresome in my life, but never to the extent Isabella Bird was! To add to the appeal of her narrative (written in the form of letters to her sister back home in England) there is the quality of her writing: such superb descriptions of place and persons, of daily life and of unforeseen adventures--magnificent use of evocative and descriptive language, so that one who loves just plain good writing is not disappointed at all! I was so taken with this writer and her adventures here in Colorado that I couldn't bear to finish the book, so allowed myself to read only a few pages a day once I saw the end of the book approaching. But finally it came--it felt like leaving a friend! But then I looked her up just in case she'd written other things--and discovered another six books narrating her travels in other parts of the world--Hawaii, Japan, Kurdistan, Persia and more of America! I bought them all and can breathe easy now and don't have to restrict myself to a few pages a day! (By the way, in case you like to read on Kindle, they're all free in that format--I guess because the copyright has run out!)

While it's a legitimate journal of a woman's real life, her skill at conveying what she has seen and experienced results in an autobiographical account that is as evocative as Zane Grey's scenery and characterizations. Her personality comes across clearly, but it is revealed through her focus on that which is outside of herself. Her competence and lack of concern over conditions and situations that would terrify and defeat most modern individuals, even hardened and experienced men, is a lesson for all women. You'll fall in love with Birdie, her faithful and personable horse; and Ring, the dog-best-friend of the sometimes lordly desperado who (I believe, anyway) falls deeply in love with her. Whether she realizes that, I'll leave you to decide.A caveat for readers who expect historical accounts to reflect Post-Modernist political correctness: Don't be put off by some of her commentary early on in the story. For example, she makes a critical evaluation of a group of Native Americans sharing a train ride. Later, however, she equally lauds other Native Americans. Her impressions are based upon what she observes. In the case of the train riders, she is put off by their severe lack of hygiene, being infested with vermin (that means lice, ticks, crabs, etc.). An equal-opportunity critic, she expresses her viewpoints about any individual whom she considers to be engaged in unhealthful or negative behaviors. However, don't be misguided by my review comments here; she is a pro-active, optimistic, and generous minded individual.I was quite sad when I came to the end of the journal's tale. That's the sign of a truly excellent read. Compelling books are hard to come by, especially ones that are true accounts. This journal is a treasure both for its historical and entertainment value.

This has become one of my favourite books of late...so much so...that I've now read it three or four times.Born in 1831 in Yorkshire, England this explorer and travel writer (in letters to her sister) tells of her experiences as a woman alone in the Rocky Mountains in 1873, where she met desperadoes, gunslingers and the early homesteaders who settled the West. She confronted grizzly bears, snowdrifts above the rooftops, and hunger...but still found the time to (apparently) fall in love with Jim Nugent, "Rocky Mountain Jim", a textbook outlaw with one eye and an affinity for violence and poetry. "A man any woman might love but no sane woman would marry" He was shot dead in a gunfight six months after she left the US to return home to England.Bird visited and wrote about her travels to Australia, The Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), India, Tibet, Persia, Kurdistan, and Turkey.She died in 1904 aged 72.

I like this style of book (self-help as narrated through someone's first-hand experiences) and thought the information in it was really good. That being said, I'm knocking off 2 stars because Jancee Dunn consistently references "research" but does not consistently cite her sources. If she quotes someone from an interview, she's good about giving their name, but there are lots and lots of references to studies and research and there's absolutely no way of knowing which study she's referring to. A lot of what she quotes sounds very interesting and I'd love to read the full study but I can't. In my opinion, it's unacceptable for someone to make money off of the hard work of hundreds of researchers and academics throughout the world and not give credit where credit is due.Overall, I thought this book contains very useful information and am glad I read it, but wish Dunn had credited the people she relied upon to build her case.

This book is full of little gems of advice and insight. From division of labor in the home, raising the kids, organization, money, to sex. I found many of the author's stories relatable and humorous. I think the book, at best, gave me useful strategies I can implement in my own life, and at least, gave me validation that I'm not alone in these struggles. That other good men, good husbands out there still bring these frustrations to their marriages.I think the women who read this book and are left feeling even angrier probably have other underlying problems. Yes, the book does put the bulk of the work needed to make changes on the woman herself, which feels defeating and infuriating. But unless divorce is something you'd seriously consider, what alternative is there? It's hard to carry the burden of having to be the one to "fix" things, be the bigger person in general, and love your husband enough to take that on in spite of all your frustrations. The ones that led to the need for someone to even write this book. But I think she modeled that wonderfully and guess what... it worked for her. Her marriage, her home life, and her job as a parent are all better off. That's worth it.The book helped me understand myself, my husband, and certain dynamics of our marriage and home life. I'd recommend it to any couple about to have a baby or already struggling. Kids change your relationship in so many unpredictable ways. This book helped put it all into perspective and helped me feel more positive overall.

I have rarely laughed out loud while reading a book. And as an avid fiction reader, I didn't know that I could get on board with something more practical. But this book? It's amazing.Helped ground me and realize a) omg I'm not the only one and b) there are genius mechanisms to deal with the stress of having a partner and a baby and thank god now I have them all neatly packaged in a witty book.I've read - and reread - this book now 3 times. Highlighted parts. Flagged others.Sometimes I just turn to it for a chuckle. Sometimes I literally reference it for "how to deal with bringing up...".It's awesome.Can't say enough good things.

This book makes me feel less alone as a mother/wife. I LOVE this book. The title may sound like a negative perspective on husbands, but the actual content of the book is not bashing husbands. It fairly looks at how everyone is responsible for a happy home (still it does address some complaints I and other moms have). It has a feminist/enlightened perspective, but is not heavy handed about it. It has helpful information and good advice/strategies to try and make your post-baby home more harmonious. At the same time, the writer is very humorous and it is very readable! It is, I would say the book is mostly about heterosexual couples, as an FYI.

If this book had a different title, I wouldn’t have to hide it from my partner. Of course, it’s catchy, and many parents can relate. It is heteronormative, as she admits. The actual stories and expert advice in the book are extremely useful, accessible and readable. I highly recommend this book. I don’t hate my husband, but the stress of coparenting is real and it does change the relationship. Why not have help? At the very least it helps me feel like I’m not alone. Other parents have to work hard on their relationships too.

This book was a timely treasure during the early days of welcoming kid #2 this year. It was a poignant reminder that many of the things I feel toward my husband are A) felt by almost all women married to men B) feelings that I don't have to let take over our interactions. I have been a fountain of "how to improve your marriage" tidbits since reading this. And we no longer feel guilty about our 2 1/2 year old feeding the dog. Here's to many more books looking at such practical topics with such gracious humor and honesty. I only wish I had written it!

This book actually really helped me, and my relationship. Not something I can say for pretty much any other book I've ever read. Jancee Dunn did a ton of research (including going to some of the top couples' therapists in the country with her husband) and shares it all. I think that ever single fight my partner and I have had since our child was born was pretty much covered verbatim in this book. So I suddenly felt very much not alone anymore, and also had a roadmap for how to approach our difficulties more gently and effectively. On top of it all, Dunn is a really good, and really funny writer. I looked forward to reading this every day while nursing my child. Definitely a book to own, and refer back to. And pass along to friends. BTW, I shared some of it with my husband, too, who also found it funny, and I think probably helpful. Hopefully the title is not too off-putting in that regard-- it's really useful for happy couples struggling to adjust to the immense change of having a child.
