My husband and I read it together before reading with our sons. We liked how the authors invested in sharing their own stories to put flesh on the ideas presented. The topics presented are practical and the self-evaluation questions at the end of ea h section are wonderful starting points for deeper discussions.

Warning: This book, and the authors' perspectives lean VERY heavily toward christian, heterosexual norms. If your perspective is less limited, you may find yourself feeling irritation, shock, and disgust at how narrow-minded the advice in this book can be.It's a shame, really, that some bits of valuable advice are so buried in patriarchal cis gendered perspectives. This book should come with a warning that the views contained herein are specific to a highly conservative worldview and may be harmful to your health.The book not only is limited in it's advice, it includes easily debunked data that, of course, supports their conservative viewpoint. Proceed with caution.

As a youth pastor, I've helped boys make wise decisions in this critical juncture of life. Since the two men come from very different backgrounds, it seems important is some parts for the reader to know who is speaking. I also appreciate how the authors repeatedly tell the reader to consult with a parent or Christian role model as they work through the book.The book is full of great information and real life examples for each of the decisions discussed. The book closes with a list of a dozen good questions to ask when making decisions. I found this book to be an “easy read” which is important in books for teen boys who don’t always “enjoy” reading.Our high school English teacher does one Christian literature book report a year. I am going to recommend she add this title to her list. I think it is an important book for all young men to read.I received a complimentary copy or Choose Greatness from Moody Press.

This is a Christian based book, written towards young men around the ages of 11-18. It discusses wise decisions that young men can choose to make, such as: respecting girls and women, avoiding drugs, building diverse friendships, and investing time in helping others, among other things. At the end of each chapter there are a list of questions for the young man reading the book to answer. It's a nice set up for a young man to discuss his thoughts and feelings on these topics with a parent or other adult that he trusts. It's never too late to choose greatness!

Excellent book for young men. Great advice in finding a role model whom you can trust. Not every young man has a father in his life, but every young man can have a father figure who will lead them in wise decisions for life choices. The chapters are deep and cover A-Z, but are needed for young men to see how to live and that they can make better choices. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of the launch group.

Rebecca Lobo won the 1995 Naismith National Player of the Year award after leading the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team to its first national championship. A: His daughter. water proofMike Golic with Andrew ChaikivskyWhen my daughter, Sydney, was ten years old, she told my wife, Chris, and me that she wanted to play lacrosse. She had grown up watching her two older brothers play, and she was eager to try it herself. Great, we told her, and have some fun out there.She lasted one game. She came off the field, took out her mouthpiece, and vowed never to return.“This isn’t fun, Dad,” she explained. “I liked watching Mike and Jake play, but the girls’ game is different. They don’t let you hit anybody. You can’t knock people down.” She was visibly disappointed.Sydney stands tough, no doubt about it. Her brothers now both play Division I football at Notre Dame, and even though they each have a few years on her, young Sydney constantly mixed it up with them. She stood her ground. She fought back. My daughter is a sweet and charming girl, but if you think you can grab the TV remote away from her while she’s watching Viva La Bam, you’re certainly in for some trouble.But toughness is never simply about physical strength. It’s a mind-set. I’ve been around athletes my whole life—swimming with the local YMCA team as a kid, wrestling in high school and college, playing in the NFL for nine seasons, working at ESPN—and you begin to see in people the direction they’re going to take, how badly they want to succeed and whether or not they have a chance at making it. Very early on, I saw in Sydney something that I had never seen before in someone so young.She was spending a happy summer swimming and playing soccer when we took a family trip to Notre Dame. Our sons were going for a four-day football camp, and we learned that the athletic department was holding a swimming camp at the same time for girls ages thirteen to eighteen. We had started Sydney with a water-safety course as soon as she was out of the crib, and before long she was picking up strokes like it was second nature. By five, she was competing in swim meets at a country club near our home in Connecticut, and she had been swimming with local teams ever since. But she was only ten years old. Could Sydney attend the Notre Dame camp? we asked. The coaches agreed to let her participate.We took her to the pool, and I looked over the practice schedule. The distances and sets seemed espe- cially grueling—workouts that would put some football players to shame—and I asked Sydney if she thought she could handle it. She nodded silently, and we kissed her goodbye.She swam the first session fine, but with the second practice, the distances began to take their toll on her young body. When she climbed out of the pool, I could tell that something was wrong. She looked sad to me, and I asked her if she was okay.“This is hard, Dad,” she said. “Oh God, this is tough.”I tried to be encouraging. “The first couple of practices are always the hardest, Sydney. You can do this. You can stick it out.”I looked at my daughter again and saw tears streaking her cheeks. I felt helpless.“It’ll be okay,” I said, holding her close in my arms. “We can ask them about easing up on the distances, maybe doing fewer sets.”She pulled away abruptly. “No,” she said, “I absolutely don’t want to do less.” She wiped her eyes dry. “I’ll be fine.” And with that, she turned around and went back into the pool for the next session.She finished all her sets that day, every lap for every stroke. She didn’t cry, didn’t come near to getting rattled, never complained. For the first time, I saw an uncommon tenacity in her as she toughed it out for three more days with the other, much older girls. She made it through the entire camp. After the last day’s session, she came back to the hotel room, and it all finally hit her.She lay down on the bed for a quick nap. She slept for fifteen hours straight.For a while, Sydney kept up with the soccer, playing goalie for a local travel team. And swimming too. After a very successful soccer season—her team won the state championship—she asked to talk with us about her future. Her future? Sydney was now eleven.“I can’t play soccer anymore,” she told us. “I want to swim in college, hopefully at Notre Dame, and I want to make the Olympic trials, maybe even get to the Games someday. I know that to do these things I’m going to need to devote all my time to swimming.”“But we thought you liked soccer?”“I do like soccer, Dad,” she said. “But I love swimming.”My wife and I were a little blown away by all this, and we had more than a few discussions about whether or not it was the right thing for her to do. At eleven, she was throwing all her chips into the pot. But I’ll be honest: Part of me was beaming with pride. She knew what she had to do, and she was going for it.It’s been three years since Sydney’s decision. She’s on her course, progressing steadily through the qualifying times at the regional level, the states, the zones, and the sectionals. Now it’s on to the Junior Nationals, then the Senior Nationals, and then hopefully the Olympic trials in 2012.She swims six days a week. On Mondays and Fridays, she swims twice, first thing in the morning and then again at night. She also has three dry-land practices each week, two-hour sessions of treadmill work and strength training. Obviously, she goes to high school too and has kept her grade point average above a 3.5. She’s usually done with Friday’s homework by Tuesday night.She seems to thrive on the routine, but there are days when she’s literally exhausted. She swims between 50,000 and 60,000 yards each week. Thirty miles every six days.They call swimming a team sport, but it isn’t really. It’s just you and the water and thousands of miles of staring at a thick black line at the bottom of the pool. You’re alone. In practices you just have to keep swimming, working out the calculus of strokes per lap and stroke rate, and executing every turn perfectly. Win a race or set a personal best and the achievement is all yours. If you fail, though, it’s not because the kicker missed a 39-yard field goal. It’s all on you.And so I worry. My daughter is a beautiful five-foot-ten woman now, but she’s also my youngest child, my little girl, and sometimes I want to grab her, hold her tight, and ask her if she’s okay.Last spring, we went with Sydney to Maryland for a sectional meet where she would be swimming in six events, from the 100-yard breaststroke to the 400-yard individual medley. Her final race was the 200-yard backstroke, and she swam it strong, finishing in 2:06.46.It was the first time that she had achieved a qualifying time for the Junior Nationals in any event, the next step in reaching her ultimate goal.When the race was over, we were all on our feet, clapping and cheering for her as she climbed out of the pool. I looked down and saw the smile on my little girl’s face, the smile of an athlete in triumph, the smile of a beautiful woman.Mike Golic is co-host of ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike in the Morning and an analyst for ESPN’s NFL coverage. Great book

I truly enjoyed this book ... several of the stories brought a tear to my eyes ... great fun good read

The premise appealed to me, but with a couple exceptions, the essays themselves were pretty bland and uninsightful. This book is recommended to young girls looking for some encouragement to continue in sports, or to anyone overly sappy about it, but for a more interesting, in-depth treatment of the subject, try Christine Brennan's Best Seat in the House.

My sister and I purchased this book for our father. He coached us in several sports growing up and proved to us and many others that girls can and should be athletes and part of teams. He was always our biggest advocate (as well as out mother). He loved this book. He actually teared up reading some of the stories, had a lot of laughs and smiles and just felt good reading the entire book.

I was so excited to get this book! My 3 yo daughter has been asking about where babies came from - after thoroughly reviewing reproduction, she was like "no, i mean, before there were any mamas or papas or eggs or sperm, where did babies come from?" I had no idea how to talk her through evolution in an accessible way, so I ordered this book (with one-day shipping, i seriously couldn't wait).we read it as soon as it was dropped off. I'll admit, it's incredibly difficult to tailor this sort of discussion to a 3yo, but that's how this book is marketed so I am going to review it as a book for 3 year olds.I just don't think it does a great job. My daughter was much more confused after reading this, how the heck does grandmother reptile have a mammal baby? Why? It makes it seem like a very quick process, like grandma fish just gave birth to a reptile. She didn't understand any part of the story the way it was written. She did like the actions - wiggling like a fish, hooting like an ape - but the idea that we share some of those characteristics with our ancient relatives was lost on her. The illustrations are nice.In the end, My approach was to focus only on the apes and humans pages. I talked her through how grandma ape had so many different kinds of babies, and one looked a little more like a human than the others. And then that ape had a lot of babies, and one of those babies looked even more like a human. Then I showed her that classic "Evolution of Man" picture and that seemed to clear things up a bit more. Now she knows that before there were babies, there were apes. It seems like the authors could have explored one step in evolution in more depth so the process was clearer.But - I am happy that these sorts of books are being written, and I applaud the authors for their respect of young kids' true curiosity about the world around them. :)

I'm sure I'm a bit biased as an evolutionary biologist here, but I really like this book. I especially like that the book can easily be geared toward multiple ages. The main story is great from any age, but as the child gets older, there is more depth added with the evolutionary trees and example species included. The emphasis on shared features and use of familiar relationship nomenclature (eg grandmother) really helps emphasize the shared relationships we have with these creatures.

It's incredibly important to raise children with scientific literacy and an understanding on how the natural world actually works. A joy for any secular parent and an absolute necessity for everyone else. Make facts louder than opinions. Evolution is a fact. Teach your children reality.

Fabulous book. My son loves its engaging story and beautiful art, and has a great time acting out the various verbs for each evolutionary stage (especially "hoot"!). We like the solid science -- especially the section in the back for parents/older kids that answers FAQs and addresses common misconceptions about evolution. We liked it so much that after we received our first copy, we immediately bought a second one for his preschool to keep.

I love this book so much. It's incredibly refreshing to see science and evidence based children's books as an option. This is a beautiful, simple, easy to understand book. It's interactive, in a sense, "Did you drink mommy's milk? Can you hoot?" it kept my kids interested (1&4) and really lays down a foundation of learning based on fact. Planting seeds and what not.There are a few negative reviews, that's from the science illiterate who have NOT read or purchased this book. While reading reviewsome keep in mind that we live in a society where evolution is controversy.

Our 5 year old was starting to ask a lot of questions that were getting difficult to answer in a way he would understand. This book does a really nice job of explaining evolution on a child's level. I think this will be a good tool for us over the next few years to help understand the science of it all.

I love this book so much. This has taken 1st place in my Foster child's book ranking list which is surprising because she is generally into the Disney books or any of the other mainstream children's books. Finding something educational that the kids actually enjoy is as close to a miracle as i believe you can get. The pictures are truly works of art and that makes it easier for the adults involved. The kids also ask questions and think about things every time we read this. If you want to raise children with problem solving skills and kids that are curious about the world this book is a must.

This book may be my favorite purchase of the year. When I selected it as a book to read to my four year old granddaughter I suspected that, as a book about evolution, it would be one of those books that I would like and she would not. Was I wrong! It quickly became her favorite book. The first time I read it with her she made me read it three times in a rows each time acting out the wiggling, cuddling, grabbing. Then at bedtime I started to read her another book, but she asked, "Could you go downstairs and get that book about Grandmother Fish?" The book is brilliantly conceived and executed. I was fascinated that a four year old would find it so comforting that she would want it to be the last book read to her before she fell asleep.

About the Author

Every kennel in North America has a story of its beginning and the course taken through the years as to where they are today and how that journey got them there. Cedarwood Pudelpointers and Bob Farris are no exception and their story has its own interesting twists over the years. For over 30 years Bob trained all breeds of hunting dogs for clients throughout the Northwest (retrievers and pointers of all breeds). When a Pudelpointer came in for training in 1975, Bob saw the advantage of owning merely one dog for both upland and waterfowl hunting and the Pudelpointer seemed to be a better upland and waterfowl choice, this was also a favorable house dog that didn't shed. What originally began as a dog training facility for hunting dogs in the 70s, eventually was transformed into a now two-person (Bob and LaFaye Farris) puppy raising facility with limited dog training offered. Understanding genetics and a passion to own the best possible hunting dogs personally has been the driving force at Cedarwood Kennels to breed Pudelpointers.

Really enjoyed this book.I’ve never had a dog bred and trained to a specific task. I’m in fact a dog lover. Always had a dog. Always felt it was necessary for that dog to be a good citizen. I’ve never had a dog that was misbehaved.Of course my dogs have never been perfect and if a person is a dog lover, they can’t really expect that degree of machine-like precision in a living being.I find myself now in a place and time when I can invest the money and the time and energy needed to get a dog devoted to hunting. Done a great deal of research on the topic. Talked to everyone that would listen or offer an opinion.Then somebody said, hey, you need to get Bob’s book, it lays it all out.The book, in fact does just that. Well written, addresses all the aspects of what to look for in a gundog and how they are bred by people that love their dogs and want healthy happy hunting companions. Covers training in a compasionate loving manner.If you have an interest in this topic or think you might want a gundog and have little experience with these breeds, you need to start with this book.

We are preparing to buy a pudelpointer pup from Bob & decided to buy his book to get ready. We have owned several hunting dogs in the past (and along with them several books about training gun dogs). This book is the best guide that we have read. We are excited to use Bob's detailed schedule to train our new puppy to help it develop into a wonderful family dog & hunting partner. The book is well written & organized and has lots of valuable information to help raise & train versatile hunting dogs!

Bob Farris is the North Star to those of us who choose to follow pudelpointers in both the field and marshes, however this book is much more than a breed book. In this book Bob has provided the training techniques, in easy to understand terms, which has made his kennel one of, if not the highest, scoring kennel in all of North America. Read this training book by not only one of the best dog trainers on the planet, but also a man who has "been there and done that" when it comes to hunting upland birds, waterfowl, and big game.

Bob Farris has been around the curve - and then some - when it comes to training the versatile hunting dog. His new book is extremely well done, clearly written and comprehensive, with photos that illustrate every technique discussed. Bob even includes a timeline, a logical progression to follow in training your dog. I’m finding it full of good information as I get my PP ready for his UPT. Except for the somewhat dated NAVHDA "green book," it's the first book I’ve read that is geared specifically to NAVHDA tests, in great detail (and I've read a lot of them). It’s packed with techniques I’ve never seen anywhere else - tremendously useful to this novice versatile trainer. Whether you are preparing your dog for tests or just want the best hunting dog possible, this book belongs on your shelf and deserves to be read again and again.

Well-written by someone who knows what he is talking about! The pictures are in full color and beautiful and the whole book is full of great tips about dog training. Bob Farris is one of the best breeders & trainers around and he definitely knows his versatile hunting dogs.

I liked how this book spends a lot of time on the other aspects of dog ownership like being a member of the house and a member of the family. I like his stories about older dog owners and the joy dogs still bring to their lives.His training sections are second to none. His knowledge of versatile dogs is deep and proven. However, any dog owner can learn something from this book.It should be on everyone's shelf.

This is a great book, it gives an accurate picture of how an excellent breeder functions. In addition a timeline on how to train your puppy fro, one of the best in the business

Great info! Read the entire book, I thought the stage by stage trading was lacking until I read the corresponding sections on prepping for navhda, now I have the complete picture! Great book!
