My Review: This was an impressive debut novel that hit all the major points that I love in a historical fiction read: vivid settings, wonderfully diverse, well-developed characters and a story line that was suspenseful and moved at a good pace. This book has officially gotten me out of my slight reading slump!I'm an avid reader of WWII/Holocaust reads but this book surprised me by bringing a compelling premise to the table surrounding Lucien, the architect at the centre of the story who hid Jews and their supporters 'in plain sight'. I found these architectural details that Belfoure, as an architect himself, added to the story fascinating. But it was Lucien's personal transformation that truly stood out for me. The reader witnesses Lucien's struggle with his desire to be a successful architect in Paris and the fact that in order to do this he has to work with the Nazis who have brought such devastation and pain to his city. The changes in his attitude and motives were convincing and believable. It was eye-opening reading the descriptions of what life was like living in Nazi occupied Paris, for Jews as well as Gentiles. The majority of the people struggled while the rich were able to scrape by and the Nazis took whatever they wanted. Life was so volatile as Parisians lived in complete terror that the Nazis would learn that you were a Jew or the suspicion that you may be helping to protect Jews. Their tactics were ruthless, obsessive and shocking making it not surprising to see neighbours turn upon neighbours in order to protect themselves. If I had to list a negative I'd have to say that there were a couple of situations that seemed too coincidental but always ended up helping the main characters in the end. Could these things realistically happen? Perhaps. In war-torn Nazi infested Paris during the war? Um, I'm not so sure. But I'll suspend reality just a bit because the architectural aspect and the characters were so interesting. This was a very impressive debut novel that had a lot of the items that I think make a good read - memorable characters, interesting premise, full of some seriously nail-biting suspenseful situations as well as some heart-wrenching scenes. But it is Lucien's transformation that is at the heart of this wonderful book.Recommended.*** This book review can also be found on my blog, The Baking Bookworm (www.thebakingbookworm.blogspot.ca) where I also share hundreds of my favourite recipes. ***

In occupied Paris, a talented French architect is hired by the conquering German military to design factories to house their war material production machinery. At first reluctant, Lucien sees it as an opportunity to finally have his designs become reality. But more meaningful design challenges await him as he tries to survive the daily strife of living under the watchful eyes of the Gestapo. The author Belfoure, through his writing, brings vivid scenes of what life under German occupation to the reader. Anyone who has even the slightest knowledge of WWII history will find the storyline, characters scenes completely believable and moving. A very satisfying read, as each page brings tension, danger and intrigue which forces the reader to continue turning the pages in pursuit of survival and closure.

As an architect myself, I found Belfoure's use of architectural elements to be very effective, although his architect-protagonist Lucien Bernard seems to be able to produce working drawings at superhuman speed. A small distraction to those who have drawn buildings, it does not detract from the overall story. His accounts of Gestapo torture and murder on the one hand, and the lengths to which some French went to protect their Jewish friends on the other, were riveting. And he does not mince words in describing French anti-Semitism, indifference and collaboration. Most of all, it reads like Alan Furst's best work -- atmospheric, taut and unpredictable, all the while creating a world of its own.

The Paris Architect was a fascinating story about an architect who lived in Paris during World War 2 & put his skills to good use by devising ingenious hiding places for prominent Jews who were being hunted by Hitler & his goons. Some of these hiding places were right under the noses of the SS & one of the best parts of the story was how frustrated & enraged the soldiers would become when they weren't able to find the person they were looking for despite their intel which told them that the Jew was indeed living in that home. My heart was racing during several parts in the book when I wasn't sure if the Gestapo agents were going to find the Jews that were hiding or not. The book was definitely a nail biter, that's for sure! The other thing I really loved about the book was the character development as we watched each of the characters navigate through their lives in the midst of a terrible war. Whether they were Parisian Jews or Parisian Gentiles, or German agents or soldiers, or wives or husbands, the reader got to experience many of the characters grow & change as they made decisions based on their own conscience, & values. As the story progressed & the characters changed with their circumstances, I found myself asking what I would have done had I been in Paris in the midst of the war. Characters that were shallow & self-serving in the beginning of the book emerged as heroes in the end when they showed courage they didn't even know they possessed & decided to help their fellow man no matter the consequences to themselves or their families. None changed so much as our main character Lucien, & I'm sure you will take as much pleasure as I did as you watch him slowly grow into the hero he becomes by the end of the book. There are also characters who you will be convinced in the beginning are "bad guys" only to be surprised & also reminded in the end that love of & compassion toward our fellow human beings still exists in this world. I really enjoyed this book & will recommend it to my friends.

The core plot is interesting and perhaps even plausible, and Paris under the Nazi occupation of Paris in 1941 is always a good venue for atmosphere and suspense. However, that’s where this book’s strengths end. The characters are cardboard cut-outs; the dialogue is obvious and juvenile; and the writing is no more than serviceable and IMHO uses far too many modern terms that tend to destroy the atmosphere that’s a strong element of the book.A good read, but not much more.

About the Author

At age 33, with a brand new personal relationship with Jesus Christ, Regi Campbell launched into the world of entrepreneurship. He's been involved in founding 15 companies, serving as CEO four times. Along the way, his energy for mentoring leaders and starting things also took root in ministry world as Regi has been involved in the formative stages of several ministries in the Atlanta area. As well as in the early stages of North Point Community Church, serving as an Elder and on the Stewardship and Long Range Planning Teams. Regi has written three books. His first, About My Father's Business, spelled out his approach to relational evangelism. His second, the first edition of Mentor Like Jesus, documented his process for mentoring men in small groups. And his most recent, What Radical Husbands Do, outlines steps for a man to win and keep his wife's heart. But mentoring younger men to become all-in Jesus-followers is Regi s passion and calling. He is currently leading his 16th mentoring group and has now personally invested in 128 men and indirectly, in their marriages and families. Radical Mentoring, the non-profit formed to help men and their churches launch men's small group mentoring has now infected churches all over the country with a systematic approach to making disciples and disciple-makers. Regi married his wife Miriam 48 years ago. Their two adult children are happily married (with five grandkids between them).

I read this based on a recommendation to help with mentoring and discipleship. While the information was great (and how can it not be when you're following Jesus and his methods) but I felt like there were times where it was repetitive. I get the process of banging something into our heads - after all, we're pretty thick skulled at times, but this was done to a point of a bit of boredom.

I loved this book!! It challenges me and definitely makes me want to mentor a group. I'm struggling with doubts about finding 8 women who will make this sort of commitment - it seems there is often challenges (some legit, some not so legit) for women to commit fully to a group like this. This book is written to men - for men. I wonder if that was intentional. It often seems much easier for a man to leave his sick children at home than a lot of moms to do in order to stick to a commitment like this (that's just one example). I could be wrong (maybe just my experience in my current circle), but I will be praying through this. I would give it 5 stars as a perfect read for men, especially if they already have a platform like the author does.

I have never looked at mentoring this way. Jesus is the great mentor! And the impact He had in the original 12 disciples, is insane when one actually sits and thinks. This book really gets to the heart of leading young men along the path of following Jesus.

Regi Campbell's 'Mentor Like Jesus' was one of the most anticipated books on my reading list. It moved into first position this week after I read Michael Hyatt's endorsement and signed up with Next Generation Mentoring to mentor a group of men in 2010. I was not disappointed. Regi clearly describes his journey of mentoring and how he has used the model of Jesus to shape his own mentoring ministry. Two important keys to that model include intentionality and commitment. Campbell is big on process - potential mentorees are invited to apply and if chosen are required to commit to attending ten monthly sessions, complete assignments, and show up on time. That's a far cry from the way we do most things in the church - publishing blanket announcements, praying someone will respond, and taking whomever shows up. Campbell argues that Jesus did it differently when he handpicked his disciples.I especially appreciate Campbell's inclusion of scripture memorization. Too often we can focus on dispensing wisdom from our own point of view and just respond to situations as they arise. By using these foundational verses we communicate the importance of God's Word in developing character and leadership.Mentoring is a great role for second chair leaders. We have more flexible schedules and have more contact with next generation leaders than do most sr pastors. We are often freer to move among various groups of people without being held to a narrowly defined ministry group like youth pastors, worship leaders, children's pastors, etc. That broad list of contacts places second chair leaders in an ideal position to mentor others. It has been a highlight of my ministry over the years."Mentor Like Jesus" provides a great introduction for Next Generation Mentoring - a ministry that equips leaders to mentor. They have developed a complete system to help you mentor successfully. You can see the details at [...]. If you've considered being a mentor I encourage you to get your hands on a copy of Regi Campbell's book and hook-up with Next Generation Mentoring. Mentor Like Jesus is available at Amazon.

I really enjoyed this book and how to approach the mentoring process they used

I have never looked at mentoring this way, and after reading this, I really don't know why not. This book is very thought provoking, and extremely well written.

Having mentored men for many years this “radical” approach was just what I needed to simplify the process and narrow the focus of the hows and whys of mentoring men. Having met Regi at our church last year was certainly instrumental in being involved in Intentional Mentoring.

Mentor Like Jesus has a number of useful tips and provides some good advice for those interested in mentoring. If the author had selected a different title and made less of the connection with Christianity, this would rank as a four-star secular book on mentoring.Mentoring does not live up to the Like Jesus claim in the following ways:- there is a strong undercurrent of elitism in the book, with guys needing to go through a tough application process in order to "make the cut" and get into Campbell's program. I understand the need to have guys make a commitment, and perhaps someone of Campbell's stature can pull it off, but regular guys like the rest of us are going to come off as full of themselves if we follow this prescription.- Campbell quotes from and has his guys read from two books with highly-questionable theology. Rob Bell's Velvet Elvis is all over the map, essentially claiming that the scriptures are full of questions, not answers. John Eldridge's Wild at Heart portrays God as a cosmic risk-taker and pushes its readers to identify a pop-psych "wound" that defines them. Spurious stuff here.- Much of what Campbell teaches his guys are secular life lessons. How to be a good dad, for example. While this is good, and I acknowledge that it can be done in a Christian context, where in the Bible do we read about Jesus giving his disciples this kind of lesson? We don't. So this book is Mentoring, but Not Like Jesus.

Alot of the complaints in the reviews about this book are that "It is too slow", and "It is too difficult to read." Guess what! This is not The Hunger Games or The Twilight Series. This is actual literature from over 100 years ago. Yes it takes work to get through the dialogue. It is not exactly a page turner in that regard. But if you can be patient, and "get into the groove' of the dialect, then you will soon be able to read through the conversation with less effort. It is rewarding! Of course, I am reading this as an adult, and because I chose to do so, and not for a homework assignment. I am glad I took the time to do so, because this to me is what literature is all about. It's rewarding - not just a book you cruise through in two days, and then give it to your 10 year old who also reads it in two days. There is a lot of social commentary, as well as commentary about the inherent decency of man, and what we do to screw up our kids along the way. Critics are correct, this is not a children's book. It just happens to be about a child. Mark Twain was a masterful writer. I hope you take the time to work through this book. Also, the Dover Thrift version does not appear to be censored - as some of the other books are purported to be.

I wanted to re-read this due to the discussions of removing it from school libraries and required reading lists related the use of a certain word. I read this in the fifth grade, and at that time, it was simply a great adventure of two boys . Now, over 50+ years later I see it in an entirely different light. It is not just an adventure of two boys... but also a social and political commentary on slavery. Now I truly appreciate the significance and genius of Mark Twain. It is a part of our history that we need to study and learn from. Like the Holocaust...we should never forget.

I wonder if somewhere in the Great By and By Mr Clemons is having himself a little chuckle every time some English teacher assigns his tome to another class of befuddled students. Surely the man who created the least literate, most rebellious, and most happily ignorant character in American Lit would appreciate the irony. He might even crack wise at the serious sermonizers and pretentious pontificators lauding his deeply flawed novel as the prodigious. Of all people, Mark Twain would know a sham when he saw one. Even taken in the context of the day, this novel's glaring inadequacies and blunders are hard to miss. But then, he would also recognize the American-ness of the response, as well, the salesman's spiel, the overblown praise, the pumped up pomposity, the urgent, if insecure, need to apply superlatives. For, like his book, America has all of the same qualities, and in that regard, it is indeed The Greatest Most Perfectest American Novel Ever Written!

I've been a votary of Mark Twain all my life, reading everything I could/can find of his, and there's plenty. Originally read this classic, along with "Tom Sawyer" as a young boy. I remember this specifically because I was so proud of my new book, in which I had written my name and age - 11 years old. Sadly, and this is a real-life true story, our family dog ate it! I swear! Anyway, at that young age I became hooked, and shortly thereafter moved on to other Twain works. It seems the next I remember was "The Mysterious Stranger" which impacted me greatly as an adolescent teenager. After that I became, as they say - off to the races. So, as an oldster now, while in a state of angst at having finished my last book and not having anything readily in mind to read,I decided to journey back and re-visit my old friend Huck. Well, I wasn't disappointed. Still brought tears to my eyes as I laughed uncontrollably at all the idiotic and downright dumb carrying-ons the characters engage in. But of course, as always, Twain's characters exhibit some good ways too, to offset the bad. This story is a classic for a reason. In the end, Mark Twain's understanding of the vagaries, complexities, and plain silliness of humans, and our human nature, was simply--to me--uncanny. And his ability to portray this through funny, whimsical, and often satirical storytelling was better than anyone else, before or after. People do good, bad, crazy, rational, silly, inexplicable, and more...stuff. All the time. They always have and they always will. They can't help themselves. They're human. Mark Twain's exposition of this was - is - a GIFT to mankind. As an aside, and as a special bonus in reading Mark Twain, I find it extra refreshing to read un-revised, unvarnished, un-PC tainted, true-to-life depictions of the way things actually were. So, if you can't or are too sensitive to deal with reality, then my recommendation is that you stay in your sanitized bubble, and deprive yourself of the joys of the truth. It really is your loss. For all the rest, just read and enjoy!

I loved this book in high school so I thought that I would buy it for my kids to read one day when I'm older. Little did I know that buying cheap would be buying weird. I love Huckleberry Finn, but this book is about 12"x9" with huge white gaps in margins and for whatever reason this book has "_" underscores in place of spaces in the weirdest contexts. I feel like I received a manuscript for the publishers to edit out. I'm not sure I'm actually supposed to be holding this. What kind of first draft stuff is this?TLDR; The book is a classic for the ages, but the publishers botched the job
