Buy the book before buying the coin -- this adage is more true today than ever before and can save you a lot of money and grief. The blue book gives a good idea of what coins are actually worth, as in if you buy a coin today and need to sell it tomorrow, here's last year's sale price. Generally, if you use the red book version only, substract about 2/3rds of the price and you'll have a fair idea of how much a coin dealer may pay you for your coin(s). The blue book is the better book to determine how much your coins are actually worth. If you want to make money in coins, hold them for a long time (e.g., 5 to 10+ years) and hope silver and gold skyrocket again. Coin collecting is a great hobby but if you're looking for an investment to quickly turnaround for profit, coin collecting, in general, is not the way to go. Like the red book version, the blue book version gives the coin collector invaluable information, albeit in summary form. In addition to buying the blue book, buy or read books on counterfeits and how to grade coins. Sadly, the market is flooded with Chinese fakes and some of these coins have even fooled experts. So, collect with caution and if a deal sounds too good to be true, walk away -- the coin may be a fake (e.g., weight is wrong) or cleaned (e.g., shiny coin but no cartwheel effect when turning it in the light) or artificially toned. (Note: cleaned coins or heavily dipped coins are worth a lot less than the prices listed in the blue book, sometimes 75% less.) This is one hobby where more knowledge through books and online articles can save you a lot of money while also enhancing enjoyment and appreciation for the beauty of coins.

As always, high quality book. I always take it to Office Depot/Max and have them spiral-bind it - the same way that the red book comes from the dealer. That way I can open it to the page I need and lay it flat while I examine the coin(s) I'm working on.

The Red Book gives the reader an idea of what the coins cost while the Blue Book gives an idea of for what they sold. I've discovered that the difference between purchase and resale can be as much as 75%, with 50% difference being the average. Please keep in mind that the prices in both the Red Book and Blue Book are about a year old because of publishing constraints. Overall, I use this book and an online site by a large coin grading service to determine the true value of coins. For serious coin traders, the Grey Sheet is a better indicator but its cost is prohibitive to many of us who collect for reasons unrelated to making a living buying and selling coins. The information in this book is worth the price alone. Always read (and buy) the book first, then buy or sell the coin.

First thing to keep in mind is that anyone buying this book is looking to see what their collection is worth. If you need to insure your collection or you are planning to sell off part or all of it, you need some idea of what to ask for it. For those reasons this book will come in very handy. This book was a labor of love by Ms. Epstein. Well reasoned, written and thoroughly researched it represents a more accurate historical account the the Banjo found it's origins in Africa. Until this book was written the Banjo was though to be an instrument of European dissent. If you play the Banjo this book will send you on your way to historical accuracy.

Classic book that dispels the racist views which were previously promoted about the history of African American music in general, and the banjo in particular.

Dena Epstein was a Chicago Librarian. She wasn't a paid musicologist, but she was determined to find out the story of African American music from the time we got off the slave ships until the Civil War. She emerged with a triumph. No one who has not read this book really knows anything about African American, or for that matter American culture and music, worth knowing. Rather than the abstract dwelling on Africanism in this or that part of Black culture, she refutes the idea that the slaves were robbed of their culture she shows how the musical culture of West Africa was carried here and how it was modified and added to. One of the most interesting aspects of Epstein's book for me is the record of the many different African instruments that were brought to the New World or were remade by Africans in the New World. The common idea that African instruments were limited to drums is refuted here strongly with her references to descriptions of different instruments found in the US and the West Indies. Along the way, Epstein was one of the first to reassert the AFricanness of the banjo and document it. One interesting question which with the easiness of hindsight and futher research I raise is the issue of fiddling. Epstein documents that contrary to the popular stereotype that AFricans in the America were primarily banjoists or drummers, in the US until the point in the 19th Century when banjos became generally available and popular among most black and poor folks, African American musicians were most closely indentified with the fiddle. This is true not only in the US but in the West Indies. Epstein does document how quickly after being "imported" African born musicians became excellent players of the fiddle, makers of fiddles, and even teachers of fiddling. She points out that the fiddle was so essential to the lives of planation African Americans that the question of whether the slave master should provide his slaves with a full time fiddler for slave dances was debated in circles who discussed how to manage slaves. The question is really posed that such quick mastery of a very difficult instrument, and the rather rapid way it was used to play African based music could not be just a coincidence or a product of some kind of general African musical ability, but the product of retention of traditions that come from West African bowed instruments. Blacks who were fiddlers already in AFrica on African fiddle like instruments were enslaved, and their rapid progress another feature of transmission of AFrican culture into this country. Of course, I am looking back from advances pioneered by Epstein and those who followed her. Read this books and celebrate that triumph and learn what must be known about Black music and American culture.

This is a very detailed, in-debth study of early Afro-American music. Dena Epstein spent decades tracking down original source material. Her book is a facinating look at pre Civil War attitudes and social practices. This is not a quick read--it is like reading a masters thesis--but anyone interested in early banjo music and/or the early history of Afro-Americans, will find this book essensial reading.

I'm a vocalist and vocal music teacher and looked around for a while for an informative, yet not boring book for me to read and use as a reference guide for some of my classes. This book is all that I'd been looking for. In fact, it's the best book that I been able to find about the history of black american folk music. It's also not an easy book to find. I've been so impressed by the books that Amazon carries.

Excellent book for those who want to understand the history of folk music in the US.

Dozens of example programs are available to illustrate each important language feature, and many tables summarize key information and provide easy access for later reference. Each chapter ends with a summary and exercises. The summary reviews key elements presented in the chapter, and the exercises augment and extend the text. This book assumes a general-purpose knowledge of the C language. It is intended for use in either a first or second programming course. However, it can be readily used in conjunction with courses on topics such as comparative programming languages, computational linguistics, data structures, database systems, fractal geometry, graphics, numerical analysis, operating systems, programming methodology, and scientific applications. C is suitable for applications from each of these domains, and all features of C needed to code such applications are explained. This book is appropriate for a data structures course because advanced data structuring features such as enumeration types, unions, self-referential structures, and ragged arrays are discussed. For operating systems courses concerned with UNIX or Windows 95/NT, the book explores the file structure and systems routines that enable the C programmer to add to existing systems libraries and understand the C code underlying the operating system. For applications programming and scientific programming, there is discussion of how to write sample function libraries. Statistics, root finding, sorting, text manipulation, file handling, and game playing are all represented with working code. New Java Section. In Chapter 14, "Moving from C to Java," we discuss how the C programmer can very naturally and easily begin programming in Java, a language of interest for work on the Internet. The Java programming language borrows ideas from both C and C++ and is designed to run in a machine- and system-independent manner. This makes it suitable for Internet work, such as writing applets for Web pages that get used by browsers. Because Java is an extension of C and C++, it is readily learned by the C programmer. Complete ANSI C Language. Computer professionals will have access to a complete treatment of the language, including enumeration types, list processing, and the operating system interface. Chapter 1, "An Overview of C," presents an overview of the language. After reading this chapter, the professional will already be able to write C code. Since the chapters are self-contained, the knowledgeable reader can skip to particular sections as needed. Chapter 11, "Input/Output and the Operating System," gives a thorough introduction to the connections to the operating system. This information will benefit the professional systems programmer needing to use C to work within an MS-DOS or UNIX environment. Interactive Environment. This book is written entirely with the modern interactive environment in mind. Experimentation is encouraged throughout. Keyboard and screen input/output is taken as the norm, and its attendant concerns are explained. Thus, the book is appropriate for users of small home and business computers as well as to users of large interactive systems. We assume that the reader will have access to an interactive ANSI C system. During the writing of this book, we used a number of different C systems: various Borland and Microsoft compilers running on IBM-compatible Pentium machines, the GNU gcc compiler and native compilers running on various workstations from DEC, SGI, and Sun, and the C compiler that runs on the Cray supercomputer in San Diego. Working Code. Our approach to describing the language is to use examples, explanation, and syntax. Working code is employed throughout. Small but useful examples are provided to describe important technical points. Small because small is comprehensible. Useful because programming is based on a hierarchy of building blocks and ultimately is pragmatic. The programs and functions described in the book can be used in actual systems. The authors' philosophy is that one should experiment and enjoy. Dissections. We use highlighted "dissections" on many programs and functions throughout the book. Dissection is a unique pedagogical tool first developed by the authors in 1984 to illuminate key features of working code. A dissection is similar to a structured walk-through of the code. Its intention is to explain to the reader newly encountered programming elements and idioms found in working code. Flexible Organization. This book is constructed to be very flexible in its use. Chapter 1, "An Overview of C," is in two parts. The first part explains the crucial programming techniques needed for interactive input/output, material that must be understood by all. The second part of Chapter 1 goes on to survey the entire language and will be comprehensible to experienced programmers familiar with comparable features from other languages. This second part can be postponed in a first programming course. Caution: Beginning programmers should postpone the second part of Chapter 1. Chapter 2, "Lexical Elements, Operators, and the C System," describes the lexical level of the language and syntactic rules, which are selectively employed to illustrate C language constructs. The instructor may decide to teach Backus-Naur-Form (BNF) notation as described in Chapter 2 or may omit it without any loss of continuity. The book uses BNF style syntactic descriptions so that the student can learn this standard form of programming language description. In addition, language components are thoroughly described by example and ordinary explanation. Reference Work. This book is designed to be a valuable reference to the C language. Throughout the book, many tables concisely illustrate key areas of the language. The complete ANSI C standard library, along with its associated header files, is described in the Appendix A, "The Standard Library." Sections in the appendix are devoted to explaining each of the standard header files such as ctype.h, stdio.h, and string.h. Where appropriate, example code is given to illustrate the use of a particular construct or function. In Appendix B, "Language Syntax," we provide the complete syntax of the C language. In Appendix C, "ANSI C Compared to Traditional C," we list the major differences between ANSI C and traditional C. Finally, special care has been taken to make the index easy to use and suitable for a reference work. The Complete ANSI C Language. Chapters 3 through 10 cover the C language feature by feature. Many advanced topics are discussed that may be omitted on first reading without loss of comprehension, if so desired. For example, enumeration types are relatively new to the language, and their use can be omitted in a first course. Machine-dependent features such as word size considerations and floating-point representation are emphasized, but many of the details need not concern the beginner. The Preprocessor. Chapter 8, "The Preprocessor," is devoted entirely to the preprocessor, which is used to extend the power and notation of the C language. Macros can be used to generate inline code that takes the place of a function call. Their use can reduce program execution time. The chapter presents a detailed discussion of the preprocessor, including new features added by the ANSI committee. In traditional C, the preprocessor varies considerably from one compiler to another. In ANSI C, the functionality of the preprocessor has been completely specified. Recursion and List Processing. Chapter 5, "Functions," has a careful discussion of recursion, which is often a mystifying topic for the beginner. The use of recursion is illustrated again in Chapter 8, "The Preprocessor," with the quicksort algorithm and in Chapter 10, "Structures and List Processing," with basic list processing techniques. A thorough knowledge of list processing techniques is necessary in advanced programming and data structure courses. Operating System Connection. Chapter 11, "Input/Output and the Operating System," makes the operating system connection. I got this originally for an advanced class in C when I had already been programming in it for a few years. I had been using K&R as the bible but K&R is a little too terse for me and I needed some examples. I have been programming in C for 20 years but I have a terrible memory and always need to refer to some part of it for syntax and usage. This book is just right for me.It is so useful I keep it with me all the time. All my friends in the lab were borrowing it so it got so dog-eared I threw it out and bought a second.It not only covers basic and advanced C, but it also has some data structures with linked lists, stacks, and queues in programs that actually compile and work. I also use the little bit they have on the differences with C++. You need another book if you really want to get into data structures or C++ but this will get you through the most common situations. Very useful indeed.

REVISED REVIEW:I originally titled this review "Bad for beginners" and gave the book 2-stars. That was when I didn't know much about programming.C is a very old language. It is a great way to learn the basics and then move on to C++. This book teaches C in the best way that it could. One bit at a time. During Chapter one, expect a lot of little explanations about a variety of topics. The authors wanted to summarize the entire language for you so that you could see very quickly that "This is this, and this is this." Chapter two immediately starts expanding on those very broad terms that chapter one spoke in. The rest of the book is spent teaching very specifically how C works and how to manipulate the computer, compiler and memory to do a whole lot of good for your future as a programmer.This book will learn ya good, but you need to stick with it!This was my review I wrote after owning teh book for a few days and getting frustrated at the first chapter's lack of "teaching" It's just my angry thoughts about the first chapter, disregard it as a legitimate review. I'm keeping it here so that if you get frustrated after chapter one, you know that i've been there and now i'm saying: It's worth it!OLD REVIEW::This book is very bland. learning is very slow and without explanation. the entire book is structured as follows:Program's source code.Dissecting the source code in varying degrees of detail. (this does this, that does this, this does that)That's it, hundred and hundred of pages without explanation. No thinking exercises, just list, after list, after list. No suggestions on how a certain bit of code can help this problem or that problem or even an explanation why.This book is bad for beginners, and yet so many universities use it as a first-year programming text for incoming freshmen.

Overall quality of my used book is pretty good, hopefully I can keep it in good condition to resell it. The book is great so far, they have several example programs and break down the C code to help understand. I am using this as a textbook in my class. But if you are just wanting to learn C so far it seems good to me, would recommend.

Possibly the best introductory text for C programming. Great examples and the end of the chapter exercises solidify the material presented in the prior pages.

I've always been told just to use K&R to learn C. I thought I needed another book to help out. Unfortunately, this book was a bit too simplistic and did very little to clarify points in K&R that were difficult. If you can program at all, this isn't the book for you.

This is an excellent book for any coach to read. His method of "creating clients" is how just about any high-earning consultant got to where they are. They recognized that what they have, holds value, and then got really good at selecting only those who were worthy of receiving that value. At it's core, it's scarcity marketing. Sometimes a product or service perceived value is directly related to the price paid.The good:-Inspirational. If you're struggling to get clients, this is a great book to read.-He shares his method of creating high earnings, with high impact clients. I also like that he says it is his path, and what worked for him might not be the right way for you. He gives you permission to find what works for you, but also shares what has worked for him.-He drills into you that you can't be needy as a coach. He doesn't spell it out, but being needy de-values your coaching. Be selective, turn down clients that aren't a good fit, and make sure your potential clients are invested. If they aren't, challenge them.- Within the book you can decipher his method of creating clients, however I don't know if even Rich understands the methodology behind why this works. He creates scarcity and has a high rate, which raises his perceived value.The bad:He has some hyperbole in there about how you should not market, not e-mail, don't go to networking events, don't cold call people. After stating this advice, 2 pages later he tells you to call someone right now. He calls it "having a conversation." Semantics my friend. He also has some examples of e-mailing people, which he also says not to do multiple times, but I think does a fair job of showing how e-mail should be used to add value to the client, and/or get them on the phone. Nothing else. He never states this explicitly thought. He is very good at explaining what has worked for him, but it would have been nice if he explained the selling/marketing/psychological techniques behind why this works.Overall I would recommend it. It was very inspiring, and I believe will help me differentiate myself as a coach.

I almost gave up on my one-on-one coaching practice as a "struggling coach" until someone mentioned this book to me at a conference. Solely because of this book, I am on the track to filling my practice. Totally inspiring and practical at the same time, this book is a precious diamond. I am almost through my third time through the book...I've never read a book three times, let alone twice. If you are a struggling coach, consultant or adviser - get this book. You'll get back more time, make more money and enjoy the lifestyle you really want to have...which is probably why you went into coaching in the first place.

Jody Mitic is a former Canadian soldier who lost both lower legs when he stepped on a land mine in Afghanistan. I learned about him, and his book, when I heard him interviewed on Jocko Willink's podcast. (Willink is a former US Navy SEAL.) The stories about his background and his military career are very interesting, but the story about his recovery after being wounded (and having to break an addiction to painkillers) is riveting. Excellent read.

Learned of this book through Trailer Park Boys interestingly enough.. Read the book and was captivated. Just an all around great read for anyone interested in military life. Jody is a very interesting person. Now currently listen to his Podcast and follow him on all social media! Highly recommend!

Good book, takes you into the military warrior's mind set/thinking, day to day life in the military and how they don't give up through family pressures, training, deployment, crazy orders, set backs, or otherwise...sometimes they would like too but they find a way. These kinds of men are truly the best of society on many levels. The book isn't a treatise or anything like that, it's just more of Jody's take on the making of a Canadian Sniper, just what the title says. I enjoyed it...and very much appreciated Jody's sacrifice and honor.

Wonderful story about a real Canadian soldier. We'll written, engaging and real. It is a study of individual courage and initiative in a tough situation. It depicts the professionalism of the Canadian Army in a realistic and non-gung ho manner. Canada should be proud.

the bulk of the book is about his fighting time which is what appealed to me & it just barely mentioned that he went into politics after his tragic injury

A fantastic read which gives a soldiers perspective of a military career and what happens after being wounded. Jody is someone whom we can all learn from.

I bought this for a friend's grandson after he was involved in a serious car crash. I read it and found it to be very inspiring.

Jody's store is one for all. A story of perseverance and the heart of our warriors.

When I was in my late teens to mid 20's and beyond, even to today, Keith Green's music has always spoken to my heart. Here I am today, 50 years old, and our 15 year old son has discovered Keith Green music, and loves it. It seems Keith's message and his music are timeless! Our son is taking piano lessons, and he really loves the song by Keith Green, "The Prodigal Son Suite", and he wanted the music to it in the worst way. I looked a lot of places for it, and when I came across this music book, which actually has the notes to the music, and not just the chords, I was elated. It made for a wonderful "stocking stuffer" for our son this past Christmas. He has begun to work on learning to play it, and is eager to be able to play the whole song, both here, and one day in heaven!

Back in the 70's I remember that many "Christian radio" stations would not play Keith Green music... Apparently they thought he was too in-your-face. Which he was. He called a spade a spade: just like Jesus did. ANYWAY ~ this collection parallels the CD of the same name (which I also own) -- and the piano arrangements are quite authentic (Keith was a pretty awesome pianist) -- as are the keys, which tend to be pretty high (he also had a huge tenor range). There are also chord symbols for those who don't read notes. If you aren't a pretty decent pianist, you will be heavily challenged; if you have the chops, you will enjoy playing these arrangements.

What's not to love. I had this a number of years ago and loaned it to someone. Needed it again, I guess. Too bad it's not spiral bound. Best selection of Keith Green songs.

I LOVE this piano music! Some of the pieces can be challenging for intermediates, but still fun to play. Great arrangements.

Purchased as a gift for a dear friend who just graduated from high school, who is a very gifted pianist and dearly loves the music of Keith Green. Althought Keith's music dates back to the early 1980s, it is timeless and multi-generational contemporary Christian music. This young man's parents - also gifted pianists, love his music, and although I am old enough to be his grandfather, I dearly love his music as well.

I just received this music for Christmas! For me, even though I love music(and Keith Green), I'm not musically inclined. But the music that is in this book has such a wide range of levels (mostly beginner/Intermediate), even I was able to play Rushing Wind right off the bat. The thing that surprised me most was the thickness of the book. For 241 pages of wonderful music it's a great deal. The only thing I have found troubling is keeping the book open. Paperclips are working right now but I might have to make copies. A spiral-bound book would've been best.

Well laid out. Only thing better would have been spiral bound with fold out music.

Keith Green's music will never grow old. Uplifting. Tells the gospel, good music. I have had the tapes, then CDs, now loaded in my iPod and iPhone, never tire of this music. Wish he were still alive to write more music.

Since I absolutely love The Art Forger, I was looking forward to a similarly engaging story. While well written, the book’s main characters left me cold and disinterested in their development. Perhaps it was the author’s intention to portray them as disagreeable and manipulative; if so, she succeeded. It was hard slogging to finish the book because I really couldn’t care about what happened to the characters.

I loved The Art Forger and The Muralist. Her third novel fell short. The assembling, displaying and “looting” of the Impressionist and Post Impressionist paintings owned by Barnes should have served as an exciting backdrop for an art-focused historical fiction. Her insight into Matisse and what he and his peers were trying to achieve was well done. By Barnes was inadequately developed, and his relationships with his wife, chief of staff and the key patrons of the Philadelphia Museum of Art were disappointingly shallow.

This is the most interesting book I have read in a long time. Wonderful, complex reading for those interested in art, art history, aesthetics, the 1920s decade...the list goes on. Shapiro has a fine hand when it comes to the English language; she wields this admirable asset deftly and effectively. Example: Descriptive passages allowing the reader to visualize. She challenges the reader to keep up, and this is one of her many strengths. Example: Moving the story through time and space with ease and facility. The story includes many historical characters who speaks as they would have spoken. Warning: Do not start this book at bedtime. You won't be able to stop. I loved it.

I anxiously await books from B AShapiro after reading The Art Forger, which was so good! The Collectors Apprentice is not at the same level....I didn’t find the characters that interesting or appealing....they seemed very flat. The pacing seemed forced, all in the service of moving the story along but not particularly interesting. It maybe was a fine book but I started with higher expectations for it so was a bit disappointed.

I was disappointed in this book it was not nearly as captivating as her earlier books. I found the language too simplistic and the plot boring. And I usually love books about art and art history. This one I put aside half read

I love the premise of the novel, and the way fact and fiction are interwoven. Clearly, Shapiro did a lot of research. I am an artist so I did not have to look up any of the artworks. However, Shapiro used a lot of cliches and skimmed too quickly over some parts. I felt like her editors/publisher gave her a word limit and super tight deadline. I would much prefer to read a book that is twenty pages longer and have it go smoothly.

In an atypical afterword for an art history novel, Shapiro describes what is fact and what is invention in her story. Which shouldn't encourage us to read historical fiction as merely dramatized history.

I love the way this book mixed facts with fiction in the art world. It was a fast enjoyable read. As usual I am never disappointed with this author’s writing and look forward to her books.

My daughter, 22 months, fell in love with the Monsters Inc. and Monsters University movies. This is a perfect addition for a child who likes the Monsters Inc.franchise. It has the characters from Monsters Inc. and doesn't include anything from Monster's University.Each page is dedicated to the letters of the alphabet and how they pertain to the movie. Such as "C" is for Celia etc. But what is really cute is that it rhymes. Nice little bonus. The rhyming helps the flow of the book and keep my kid entertained.Of course, anything educational is a bonus so I love the alphabet format that includes my daughter's favorite movie!I agree that the age group for this book, 1-3, would've been better if they made this into a board book. Therefore I knock a star off my rating.Otherwise, such a cute and fun read!

My daughter loves the book. It’s super cute. EXCEPT the alphabet only goes up to K. Not sure if the book is incomplete, but it would make sense to have the full alphabet in the book.

I loved Golden Books as a child so naturally as a new dad I have been creating a collection of goldenbooks for my daughter.This particular book is one of my favorites to read to my daughter. It's a great start for my daughter to learn the alphabet and the book reads nicely as everything rhymes. My daughter is 8 months old so some of the other golden books with more dialogue are lost on her as her attention span is only about 5 minutes. So this is a good book for younger children about 3+ months and up.

The writing is pretty lack luster and it has little to do with the movies but it does go through the alphabet and it’s entertaining enough.

I love books & cannot wait to start reading to my baby when it comes.

My 2 year old loves monsters inc and this is a really cute alphabet book. Classic golden book so the pages are a little thin but my daughter is gentle with books

My daughter loves Monsters Inc. This book was a must have. She loves having it read to her every night before bed. Being a golden book the quality is great and I like that it's not too long. My daughter looses interest if her bedtime stories are too long.

Okay, this book is seriously so cute. My four year old did not think so though but that’s his problem.
