Fascinating (and terrifying) look into the mindset and extensive reach of the jihadis. They are everywhere, networked, with a bloodlust to kill, which they see as a glorious martrydom which brings eternal rewards. Fascintaing and disturbing look into operation of intel and counterintel agencies, and relationships between the Danes, Brits and Americans. But how much is true? Storm has provided enough evidence to the Danish papers which first published his story and to the publishers of the book so that it is clear he had extensive ties with many of the notorious jihadis and extensive ties to Danish, British and American security services. But whether the exact story is completely true, his relationship with them is exactly as described and whether it has really ended is not so clear, at least to me.According to the book, Mr. Storm left his dangerous life after unfriendly break-ups in his relationships with all three sets of agencies (4 if you count two for the Brits, MI 5 and MI6) and has gone public with details of his betrayal of some of the most dangerous men on the planet, including Anwer al Alwaki, whom he claims to have set up for the drone strike that killed him. With no protection, how is he still alive? In fact, one might flip that question and ask: given what he has written about various of the jihadi, and the claims he makes about what he did, how is he still alive regardless of whether his claims are true or not? That leads to its own avenues of speculation. Another major question the book raises for me is to the tremendous amount of operational detail exposed as to how Western intel does manage to foil plots and find targets to kill. If all accurate, was this all already known to jihadi leadership, and if not, has Storm compromised future Western operations? Something presumably a passionate enemy of jihad would not want to do. So does that mean lots is intentional misinformation (meaning he still works for someone), or is most of it made up, or is he completely amoral and who knows where he stands now, if anywhere? Other questions arise with respect to his family. Storm purports to have two children he loves dearly, being raised Muslim by his first (Muslim) wife. Again, question as to their safety after publication of this book. And what belief system they are being raised in, presumably Muslim - but Storm says has rejected Islam altogether. What does this mean as to his children? And his second wife who was with him believing he was a committed jihadi, although not necessarily an operational one. He uses a psuedonym for her,he says to protect her. Well, she is Yemeni, they lived in Yemen where he moved in jihadi circles. How exactly is she protected? Certainly not merely by a pseudonym. And is she relieved he isn't really a jihadi? Or furious at the deception and has left him? These family questions are not addressed.Summary: totally fascinating book, whether completely true or not. Worth reading whether totally true or not. Raises lots of questions that remain unanswered.

Forget James Bond. Six-foot-one, 250 pounds, with flaming red hair, Morten Storm is the real deal. This guy really did infiltrate al-Qaeda and operate at the highest levels of the network for many years. And, apparently, he’s still alive (somewhere) to tell the tale.If Agent Storm were a novel, you wouldn’t believe a word of it. It’s not. The co-authors wrote the book based on weeks of interviews and months of documentary research to confirm what they learned. In an author’s note that prefaces the text, they write that “What makes Morten Storm’s story unique is the extraordinary amount of audiovisual evidence and electronic communications he collected during his time as a spy, which both corroborate his story and enrich his account.”Much later, in Storm’s acknowledgment at the conclusion of the book, we learn that co-author Paul Cruickshank, a British journalist, “is now CNN’s terrorism analyst and the editor of a recent five-volume collection of scholarship on al-Qaeda.” Like Cruickshank, co-author Tim Lister had “reported on al-Qaeda terrorism and international security for many years.” And the book includes snapshots of much of the documentation that Storm so carefully collected over the years, which help to confirm the context surrounding the clandestine recordings of his conversations with his Western handlers. So much for any doubts about the credibility of this astonishing tale.Written as a first-person account, Agent Storm relates the experiences over a decade of a young Danish man who describes himself as, early in life, a “biker, boozer, and boxer.” Raised in a violent, alcohol-fueled home and a veteran of criminal gangs in adolescence, Morten Storm turned to Islam at the age of twenty-one and made his way with the fierce and sudden conviction of a convert into radical jihadist circles. Gradually drifting into the heart of al-Qaeda in Yemen in the late 1990s, Storm was seen as a valuable asset by the terrorist network and eventually given an audience with Anwar al-Awlaki. Awlaki was the radical American Muslim cleric who rose to head what became the most powerful arm of al-Qaeda following the death of Osama bin Laden many years later; he was widely considered to be the successor to Ayman al-Zawahari, the man who took over following bin Laden’s death. Eventually, Storm became a close and trusted aide to Awlaki. The cleric even entrusted him with the job of recruiting his third wife, a blonde Westerner, as well as funneling money and supplies to him and his followers (as directed by Western intelligence agencies). Awlaki, you may recall, was the first American to be targeted and killed by a US drone strike — and the authors make a very good case for demonstrating that Morten Storm provided the crucial link that led to the cleric’s assassination. This account of Storm’s evolving beliefs over the years, and his 180-degree turn into becoming a spy for Danish intelligence, MI5 and MI6, and the CIA, is an intensely suspenseful tale that stacks up to any novel of espionage as a cliffhanger. It is also a carefully measured condemnation of Danish intelligence and the CIA, and to a lesser extent of the twin British agencies — measured, because Storm is critical of no one more than himself. The details about distrust and conflict among the various agencies are worth the price of the book in their own right. (Hint: they thought little was wrong with undermining one another’s operations — and these were all allies.)If you’re looking for insight into the minds and mores of radical Islamists and a true account of how Western powers practice the craft of intelligence, Agent Storm is an eye-opening introduction.

This is one of the most interesting and exciting true spy accounts I have ever read. In fact, Storm is probably unique in his abilities. The book is amazingly relevant to this period in the Middle East, where recruits come from all over the world, including Europe, to seek martyrdom for groups like ISIS and Al Quada. (There are many more Westerners willing to die for Islam than I could have imagined). Morten Storm's story is gripping. He earned the trust of the highest leaders of a number of terrorist groups, and was able to help 3 different national intelligence agencies take them out. He also has overwhelming evidence that his story is true. This book will become an important source of the history of the Middle East during the last 10 yrs.

I would rate this book a 10 if the system let me. I worked with the dietician at my GI doctor's office to remove FODMAPs from my diet. The information I was given to reintroduce FODMAPs was confusing, overwhelming and lacking in specificity. This book lays out challenging and reintroducing FODMAPs in an easy format. There is no guess-work about which foods to try or how much of a particular food. I recommend this book to everyone I meet who is struggling with FODMAPs. It's even helpful to read before you challenge your body as you reintroduce FODMAPs to your gut.

Suffering from IBS at 31 was not a walk in the park by any means. I had constant stomach pain and bloating and had no real idea why. Finally a doctor suggested IBS and I was stunned, never realizing how IBS can affect individuals differently. After learning about the FODMAP Diet and the elimination process I finally started to feel better. I was able to do that the first phase entirely free, by following some blogs and Pinterest. However, the reintroduction phase is an entirely different story.I tried reading blogs; there wasn't enough information. Nothing on Pinterest. Nothing nowhere, except paying for a nutritionist, and I don't know about you, but my deductibles are just way too high. I discovered The Re-challenging and Reintroducing FODMAPS: A self-help guide to the entire reintroduction phase of the low FODMAP diet.I bought the kindle edition, so I could carry my kindle everywhere and constantly remind myself of my options when choosing items to reintroduce. The book itself is rather short, but it is a lot of information, so you will need to go back to it, multiple times. I'm very glad I got the kindle book.I have reintroduced about 4 of the high FODMAPS back into my diet, keeping a food journal for the first time in my life, to really keep track of my triggers, and I am just so grateful for this book to have helped me map all of this and make it through with very little ease.

The content is excellent (grammar corrections and editing would be useful). Contents are clear and easily understood. Page numbers would help as there is a subject list in the back of the pamphlet with page numbers that don't exist on the individual pamphlet pages. I went through the pamphlet and numbered the pages to match those of the content list. The small pamphlet is VERY helpful when attempting to reintroduce foods. Especially helpful was his notation that you may be more sensitive to foods now that you have been avoiding for some time. I had observed that and didn't know why this was the case. Apparently this problem has not been carefully researched to date.

I recently purchased the Kindle version. It is very well-written and research-based information. I now feel prepared to forge ahead with food reintroduction. I have supportive healthcare, but I don't have access to IBS specialists in my local area. The reintroduction process is complicated, and I actually appreciate the succinct presentation. I don't mind the cost because for me to be able to have this guide gives enormous benefit. My only challenge is that the charts are not able to increase font size as does the text on my Kindle, so they are a bit hard to read. Other than that, I am very satisfied with this purchase.

I am on the first week of re-introduction and this short book has answered so many questions. I am not working with a dietician, but my Gastro advised I try this diet.I found relief in days after starting the low FODMAP diet and was very pleased. Was terrified to start re-introduction and this book has quelled some of those fears. I am now looking forward to next week's challenge!

I have been working on getting control of my diet to help with my gut issues - hence trying Fodmap. I finally felt like I had the hang of it but didn't really know how to take the next step. This book really helped. I am now on my 5th elimination test and working my way through to the 10th. It made it easy to understand - much better than anything I was seeing online. You can get the kindle version for free if you have amazon prime but it made all the charts really small. I am very glad I got the book because I am daily referring to it. Great purchase!

My only concern is that Martin's protocol in some ways contradicts the Monash protocol for the elimination portion of the FODMAP program. Some foods that he includes in the challenge portion I have been eating throughout the elimination phase, such as green beans and broccoli. The charts of foods in each of the FODMSP groups have been very helpful to me in mapping out the challenge phase.

This refers to the Kindle edition. This is not a book. It is a very brief explanation of the challenge and reintroduction process. It's good information, but not worth $7.95. I couldn't believe how short this was! I actually returned it. It was more like something that you might find on a web page. A good web page, but not enough for a book.

Review

"If you think all languages have been deciphered, this manuscript offers up a challenge--and provides unique symbols leading to the possibility that it's a lost alchemical work." (Diane C. Donovan, California Bookwatch, Dec 2006)

From the Back Cover

ANCIENT MYSTERIES Since its discovery by Wilfrid Voynich in an Italian monastery in 1912, the Voynich Manuscript has baffled scholars and cryptanalysts with its unidentifiable script and bizarre illustrations. Written in an unknown language or an as-yet undecipherable code, this medieval manuscript contains hundreds of illustrations of unknown plants, cosmological charts, and inexplicable scenes of naked “nymphs” bathing in a green liquid that some interpret as a symbolic depiction of human reproduction and the joining of the soul with the body. Gerry Kennedy and Rob Churchill explore the mystery surrounding the Voynich Manuscript, examining the many existing theories about the possible authors of this work and the information it may contain. They trace the speculative history of the manuscript and reveal those who may be connected to it, including Roger Bacon, John Dee, Edward Kelley, and the Cathars. With the possibility that it may be a lost alchemical text or other esoteric work, this manuscript remains one of the most intriguing yet enigmatic documents ever to have come to light. GERRY KENNEDY is a freelance writer and has produced a number of BBC Radio 4 programs, including one on the Voynich Manuscript in 2001. ROB CHURCHILL is a professional writer who has written scripts for many production companies, including the BBC and Thames Television. Both authors were consultants for the BBC/Mentorn Films documentary The Voynich Mystery. They live in London.

#339,014 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I bought this book recently, and I must say I'm impressed. I found it to be very informative. However, I also have to say that it is lacking in the way photos of pages in the MS. The text and the drawings in the MS are discussed, but since the MS is so long and so "illustrated," it's disappointing that so few of the pages in the document are actually shown in this book. But this is still a really good book for what IS in it (or for most of what's in it), in my opinion. The VMS is one of the most fascinating enigmas (if not THE most fascinating one) that I've become familiar with. Everything about it is mystifying. Who wrote it? Why did they write it? Is it in an "encrypted" natural language, or is it perhaps in a "made-up" language? Just exactly what is the significance of the many plants, of the mostly-naked females, and of the other strange imagery? Is the MS "mystical," or does it have some botanical or medical or religious significance? Do the text and the drawings really even have to do with each other? To this very day, the answers to these questions remain uncertain, though theories abound. Since the publication of this book, the VMS has been carbon-dated and appears to have been created between 1403-1438, and so it seems unlikely that it's a hoax, as the book several times admits it may be --- and as one of the authors believed (believes?) it was (is?); one thing that's for sure is that it isn't a 20th-Century hoax perpetrated by Wilfrid Voynich himself (or for that matter, by anyone else). Thus, a good bit of what it is in the book is now outdated (most of that stuff is in the last two chapters). But most of it is still "contemporary." This book discusses many of the theories and "decryptions" that have been put forward, and how they were carried out --- as well as how they were flawed. Probably the best example of a so-called "solution" to the puzzle of the VMS was the very-convoluted one presented by Prof. William Romaine Newbold, who firmly believed, as did Wilfrid Voynich himself, that the MS was the work of Roger Bacon. The best "debunker" in the book is probably Prof. John Mathews Manly, who worked to show that Newbold's "decryption" was wrong. The book also concerns the many methods of creating ciphers, and their strengths and weaknesses. (A cipher may SEEM "unbreakable" when in fact it's far from it, as the book demonstrates.) Of all the attempts that have been made to "crack" the MS' "cipher" (if that's even what it truly is), and to figure out how the cipher might have been created in the first place, NONE have produced "results" that are completely respectable, if at all. Could it be that the MS is the product of a "not right" mind, or of someone suffering from migraine hallucinations? Not one "explanation" for the MS seems entirely satisfactory. Perhaps there isn't just one explanation, and there are many different factors at work. As I said before, I found this book to be very informative. But, in addition to the lack of photos from the VMS, it has some other shortcomings, at least in my opinion. For one thing, on page 152 it says of the MS, "there are no doubled letters." But, earlier, on page 117, in the discussion of James Martin Feely's "Voynichese to Latin" translations of the "Voynichese words" appearing on that page, one of the "Voynichese" letters (the one that looks like a 'c' and that Feely "transcribes" as 'm') clearly appears twice in a row in the words. 'MM' and even 'MMM' also appear in many of Feely's other "transcriptions," and there is one instance of 'NN.' [Edit from Oct.'13: Since I first posted this review, I've realized that there are also many other instances in the book where the same letter shows up twice in a row in Voynichese words!] Inconsistent, unless I've missed something or don't have something straight. And, as someone else pointed out, the authors don't seem to understand alchemy. (I suppose it could well be that the MS was meant as an alchemical experiment.) There were also places where I found the book to be sort of tedious, although it managed to hold my interest nonetheless. (The inclusion of the outdated stuff is a potential problem, as that stuff was still "valid" when the book was published, but at the same time, will fool those who aren't aware of the fact that the MS has been carbon-dated, or of its apparent [approximate] age.) I must say also that there are a few places in the book that trouble me a bit, for reasons that are rather personal. The authors are apparently atheists who do not believe in the existence of the spiritual world, or in any truly "spiritual" or "psychical" manifestations. I respect those who do not subscribe to any religion and who do not believe in the "spiritual" or the "psychical," and I don't want to argue with any of them here, but to me, the authors' attitude toward these matters is kind of off-putting. I don't doubt that people can and probably have misinterpreted purely "scientific" occurrences as "spiritual"/"psychic"/"divine intervention," but I firmly believe that science cannot account for everything, at least not entirely. But again, I don't want to argue with anyone. I'm not here to shoot anyone because of what they believe or don't believe. Despite my issues with the book, I really do think it's really good overall!

A great book. Full of possibilities; a nice review of the now long history of this mysterious manuscript. After reading the book, I have a feeling that it is not supposed to be deciphered and it is some sort of Alchemy in a form of book: whoever researches it, finds the truth they are looking for, or they believe in. Nobody got rich with the manuscript, as far as i can tell, but many had the feeling they reached some sort of a personal satisfaction of one's innermost desires. The last owner of the manuscript donated it but there is a mention that he personally went to the Vatican Library and found out that the Vatican was surprised that they did not have it there, when it should have received from Villa Mondragone in 1912...

The authors present a wide-ranging account of the approaches that have been taken to interpreting the VM. The writing is a bit bumpy, perhaps because of the multiple authors, but that doesn't interfere with the lucidity and cohesion of the book as a whole. I especially appreciated the material on the history of cryptography and cryptanalysis in chapters 4 and 5: an exceptionally clear yet adequately terse account of the methods that underlie the core of efforts both old and new to decipher the script. I'm less sure of the value of attempts to gain insight from the graphics, presented in chapter 6. Yet some consideration of them is absolutely necessary, since they provide the atmosphere that's certainly out of this world, making anyone examining the VM believe there must be something of value hidden within it.Sadly the book was published before the results of radio-carbon dating of the vellum were published. If accurate, that dating rules out origination prior to the 15th century. However, the samples used for that analysis may have skewed the results, so I don't suppose we've heard the last word in that arena yet.One thought the book prompted, which so far as I know hasn't been considered. Could the VM be simply a fantasy-fiction work, not deliberately intended to deceive or defraud as a hoax would?

The authors do a fantastic job describing the Voynich manuscript's rich history and the history of efforts to break its secrets. It is only harmed by being pre-2011 and therefore the 1404-1438 radiocarbon dating of the MS was not complete. That means some avenues of research and thought are now obsolete. Reader be warned! This is no fault of the authors, however.

A superb overview of the Voynich Mystery, the authors balance the clinical analysis needed with a thought provoking writing style. Opening every possible door and examining each thoroughly before shutting them, only at the end are we left with their own opinions as to what this thing is and what it might mean. From cryptography to psychiatry to theology to in the dirt historical research, every angle is examined. An excellent recitation and discussion of a fascinating mystery.I would happily buy an updated version detailing recent technical analysis carried out on the manuscript. From my view, the it's most likely this thing is simply a 15th century hoax related to alchemy- that "science" was infected with hoaxes. But if it's not the significant improvement in computing power in recent years should eventually crack whatever code exists. So hopefully one day we'll know what those plump nymphs were really up to.

A great curiosity and does give a person a lot to think about. Makes a person wish they had an actual copy to study.
