From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-This big, bright, bold picture book introduces the Beatles and describes their fan culture. The authors have used actual quotes from the "Fab Four" to demonstrate their self-deprecating humor. It comes through loud and strong. The rise to fame happens quickly and seems almost as unbelievable today as it did in the Beatles' glory days. Many songs, concert dates, and crazy details are included. A time line covers major happenings but strangely leaves out when Ringo joined the band. One double-page illustration alludes to the famous Abbey Road album and Apple Records, but nothing in the text gives that information, so it would be left to adults, probably grandparents, to share their knowledge with younger readers. Likewise the use of 45 rpm records in the illustrations and the reaction to the Beatle haircuts calls for some explanation as well. This title could well develop cross-generational sharing or new fans for the Beatles and their music. A fun and nostalgic look at the 1960s.-Erlene Bishop Killeen, Stoughton Area School District, WIα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. From Booklist

A book or two (or thousand) has been published on the Beatles, but here’s a fresh angle: a picture book focusing on the Fab Four’s humor. Krull and Brewer trace the lovable Liverpudlians from their humble roots to their final days in the studio, pausing at each juncture to remind us of their wit. Sometimes this works well: Paul refuses a suggestion about changing a “yeah, yeah, yeah” by replying, “no, no, no,” for example. Other times, these bits of mirth feel shoehorned. In fact, the most successful section is when the authors dispense with story line and give each band member a full page on which each of his choicest jibes are presented. Innerst’s acrylic-and-ink illustrations do a fine job with the likenesses, turning the mop tops into droll bobble heads and inserting nifty ideas throughout, as when touring is depicted as the band riding down a guitar case like a roller coaster. Kids new to the Beatles might wonder what’s the ado, but put on an LP, and they’ll probably start bouncing to the beat. Grades 2-4. --Daniel Kraus

Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul, by Stephen Jenkinson

Review

“Stephen Jenkinson’s elegant and sorrow-freighted book brings prophetic insight rather than pastoral affirmations. A true story-man, Jenkinson paints image after image on the cave wall of his parchment. Die Wise is a formidable body of work, road-tested in ways most of us hope never to know about. Stay with it, hold the sorrow as the gift it is, savor in small, immense chunks. Every word is an invitation to trade fantasy for imagination. There isn’t a book like it.” —Dr. Martin Shaw, author of Snowy Tower: Parzival and the Wet, Black Branch of Language

When I was in college the books of Carlos Castaneda ("Don Juan Series") were all the rage, and I consumed the three that were available. I was fascinated by his (Don Juan's) description of Death as my Ally. It seemed so thrillingly dangerous and exciting to have a powerful teacher whose proportions were close to infinity. Obviously, at eighteen, and materially secure, death seems far away. That college girl is long gone, and I have lost friends and family to war, accident, murder, sickness, and old age; and my own eventual death has assumed real, normal proportions. I have been a witness and participant in how my culture handles death, and would never wish a hospital passing on any of us. But how to accept and learn from my dying time, and how to let death guide my living?Enter Stephen Jenkinson's marvelous book. I saw the DVD first, so I was prepared for his method of storytelling, and found the writing clean, clear, humane, loving, honest, and wholly helpful. While I am currently healthy and strong, I won't be forever. Also my husband and I have taken my mother to live with us, so we live daily with her ageing as well as our own. To be reminded so well that life is a privilege and not a right, and to have Jenkinson's help in putting all my other losses into a proper context, including the tragedy that passes for their end of life care, is deeply reassuring. Now I have a way to reach back to Death as Ally, and use that understanding properly to live every day. Thank you, Stephen Jenkinson, for writing this book.

I really wanted to understand this book, to digest it and have it be of some aid to me while actively grieving as I was watching my 94 year old father' health decline. That being said it was a difficult read and maybe just a mere 100 pages and I decided to buy the audiobook. This enabled me to hear the author's words, hear him accentuate and emphasize what needed to heard. Oh and what a delight it was. Sometimes would read along as he spoke sometimes just listen without the written word. This also allowed me to be able to replay what he had just said if I didn't understand it. At times, whole paragraphs of the book I didn't understand but I'd repeat them in his words and listen again and again until I got it.The richness of his words spoken by him enabled me to really glean much from his beautiful life's work.

Die Wise is a powerful and uncompromising testament to the way things have gone wrong in our society, and to the great debt we have all forgotten for the privilege of being here. This is a beautiful book. It is full of the heart-wrenching realities that we fail to acknowledge as a society, in the treatment of our death and the deaths of our loved ones. Stephen Jenkinson has an incisive wisdom that is conveyed through a poet's eyes. Still, he maintains the unflinching determination to say what needs to be said regardless of how it will be received. We live in a society that looks to candy-coat every uncomfortable truth, and therefore gives us a free pass to extend our adolescence into our time of dying. Which means that we never see our death, the deaths of others, or have the maturity to honor death for what it is. In this book, Stephen Jenkinson asks us to look at the roots of our perpetually adolescent-minded society so that we can see how deeply it impacts us and the world we live in. It is a call to action that demands that we begin acknowledging and honoring all of our relations in the greater scheme of things, which is to say that we realize that Life means more than just "my life." We are well into the waning arc of the civilization that has birthed and sustained us, it is a time for learning to grieve all that has gone unnoticed, all that has not been honored and because of it is suffering the starvation that is collectively felt and never satiated by our consumer society. It is a starvation of the Soul. While Stephen Jenkinson does not provide any answers as to how we do this, he helps us start to feel around the edges of the hole within us, where one day that Soul can be found in our future generations if we begin the work now. This book is a must read for everyone.

After reading Die Wise I feel as though I've been on a sort of walkabout. I have a clarity of vision that brings forth more interesting questions. Stephen's way of writing is challenging in the way that appreciating the taste of something new and you're not sure if you like it or not is. I found myself re-reading numerous paragraphs over and over again. And they would often leave my linear mind wanting, but something would open in my emotional field, like catching the scent of a summer lily, that would make me pause and with a sense of attention and stillness.I work in the medical field and have seen the damage caused by "if you can do something, you must." And I have seen the damage caused by military mindset toward healing. I too feel strongly we need different metaphors and options.Die Wise is not an easy read, and if you decide to engage this work, take it in small doses. Savor and simmer what his words call forth in your mind and emotions. This is a book that encourages living into the questions. And in our bullet pointed solution based internet world, this kind of inquiry is deeply nourishing to the way they human heart loves to wander and wonder.
