This is an absolutely readable book and I quite enjoyed reading it. There were some obscure nuggets of info that I didn't before on some items; all in all I'd recommend the book to someone who is completely ignorant of the subject.Is it the best work out there? No! However, a book with more meat and substance would be quite scholarly with costs to match. Coming from where I do, the subject of Hinduism, Jainism, and Islam was, in my opinion, somewhat watered down; probably to appeal to it's, assumedly, intended audience, the American Christian reader. For example, the subject of untouchability is not handled at all -- which was a big disappointment. Another case in point, Muharram -- it is a major cause of discontent between Shiites and Sunnis. In essence, the book has steered clear of anything controversial or negative.The highlight of the book is that, as much as is humanly possible, the subject matters within each religion/sect is arranged evenly. So, whether you are reading about Buddhism, or Judaism, you will encounter a similar flow of content.

This was a good introduction of common religions like Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism, plus several other religions that center around similar themes and founded in the Middle East. Also, contained a summary of ancient polytheistic religions held by Egypt and Greece. Missing though, are Earth-based religions like Native American religions, Wicca and Paganism.

Great overview of the major religions. Because Islam and Christianity are of the largest, I wish more information would have been given about the different factions of each, especially Christians since each can believe quite differently. The differences seem most profound in Christianity. Maybe that would be too much material to cover but some religions inside Christianity have a larger membership than some of the lesser major religions such as Jainism or Zoroaster.Never-the-less, it is important information where you can gain a respect for people unlike you all over the earth by understanding how their particular belief shapes their life. Much respect gained.

This is a great, unbiased book of the major religions. There are no obscene pictures. There are pictures that are relevant to the religion but no nudity. I was looking specifically for that on a book to use for class. The only thing I wish was included was pronunciation guides. You have to look up all the words to see how to properly pronounce them.

As a teacher of a Bible study group at my church I decided to teach a series about other religions. This was the book I chose and it served me well. I found the consistent way each was presented made it easier to make comparisons.

Worth ones time to read. If you are even slightly interested in the subject.I learned a bit about Zoroastrianism and Zarathustra . Will most likely re-readas all good books should be.Worth the price.

The book was very interesting. It covered most of the rituals, symbols and beliefs of the major religions. Knowing some of the smaller details of certain religions they or other details were not addressed.

A superficial view of religions, good for those who just want a quick 'cheat sheet' to sound smart in conversations. The author obviously has no clue about the philosophical aspects behind any of these religions. For instance, he claims that Hinduism it not monotheistic because it has many gods and goddesses, but his lack of depth prevents him from knowing that these are perceived as manifestations of one universal God. Although this is a common misunderstanding, someone writing a book about religions—and the transcendental truths for which humans still kill each other—should put a little more effort to understand what he's writing about.

My daughter is coming up on her 15th birthday — she’s getting this book. And you, the adult reading this: If your ideal of a visual binge is multiple episodes of something on the flat screen and you’d like some rich, vibrant eye candy wrapped around a poem, yeah, do it. (Style advice: Then put it on the coffee table, like it’s an award-winning art book.)I’m not the only one who’s nuts about “Radiant Child.” It won the 2017 Randolph Caldecott Medal. It was a “best book” of the year for the Washington Post, NPR, Kirkus and Publishers Weekly, and many more. Why? Because what Javaka Steptoe has recorded in this book is the arc from dream to accomplishment. What ingredients are necessary for that to happen. Who needs to provide support. The price that gets paid. And who gets acknowledged at the pinnacle.As a kid, he tells us, Basquiat “wakes from his dreams” to draw. I'm an artist myself, and normally I'm repelled by the very idea of a visual artist doing a picture book about a visual artist, especially one as unique as Jean-Michel Basquiat. But I'm completely entranced by this one. I love the illustrations -- they really seem to speak to a special relationship between artist Steptoe and artist Basquiat. Especially luminous is the depiction of Basquiat's mother taking him to see Picasso's Guernica while it was still in New York's Museum of Modern Art.I'd agree with one other reviewer that it would be a shame to restrict Radiant Child to grades 1-5. It's great for anyone who has a feeling for art, image, and the creative process.

I purchased this for my brother and nephew and they absolutely love it! As a Basquiat fan I was excited to find a story in a children's book format. I plan to purchased a copy for my son as well as for use in my own classroom! I highly recommend this book, especially if you are a Basquiat admirer.

This book is so great! I wanted to introduce my son to Jean -Michel Basquiat's art and story. This book does just that. The art work in the book is wonderful. My son loves the book! There is really no way to describe the beauty of this "Picture Book" as it tells an immensely complex tale of an immensely complex artist -- in a way that kids can recognize themselves in this icon of a generation. The collage of visuals either follow, or lead, the complexity of Basquiat's life. For all those Baby Boomers having kids there late 40s and fifties, Javaka Steptoe's work allows your youngsters to know a part of you and history. Not to mention, no one else I've seen can hold the attention of a bunch of kids in a library like this author seems to. The Caldecott Medal was well aimed.

Javaka Steptoe does a wonderful job of bringing the child, Jean Michael Basquiat, to life with his richly collaged and layered colorful images. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century, Basqauit's powerful ability to provide iconic and visionary commentary on African American culture, history, and heroes - through his art - is legendary. This special book's focus on his childhood creativity is illuminating. ~ Thank you, Mr. Steptoe!

Bought this for my seven year old granddaughter who loves museums and making things. The illustrations are as "radiant" as the title and the story line is perfect for this age group.

Written by two different authors, who have totally different perspectives on rapid classifications. The runs written by the father are over classified (rapids listed as Class IV are probably Class III). The runs written by the son are sometimes slightly under classified (rapids listed as Class IV might be IV+). This means when you read a description and it lists a rapid as Class IV you have no idea what to expect. This book is extremely outdated and there are better options available.

This book is a fantastic resource with almost everything you want or need to know about the areas covered. My only criticism would be that the maps could stand more detail, and be smaller scale. Regardless, it clearly identifies the access locations for rivers, all the major rapids, and how to go through or get around them. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in paddling in the western Carolina's.
