Great book. It goes into Swift in the detail I want and it is comprehensive. I have to say that the chapters cover too much ground and the subject is way too dense for 100 page chapters. If Matt broke it up more it would be more readable. Having said that I have nothing but good to say about the book and it is a great investment for those of us looking to get hired in software development.

As others have mentioned, this is not a good book with which to learn IOS 9 Programming. It is more a reference to the language definition that goes into excruciating detail. If you are not an advanced programmer with a lot of experience in object oriented programming, stay away from this book.

Better as a reference book than a cover-to-cover study.

I am an accomplished C and C++. While I found the author to be a bit wordy at times the depth that he went into and the way he used code examples to show the concepts was quite good. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone trying to pick up swift.

Great book and laying the foundational knowledge to Swift 2.0, i0S9 and Xcode 7. With so many paid online tutorials out there, it is really nice to dive into the details and understand the foundation of what certain code elements are and how they are constructed. 95 pages read and about 4 hours of spent so far and I can't wait for the iOS9 programming book to get released. It is really helpful to code the examples in Xcode Playground to see the examples run, especially as a beginner.

The author gave wrong information the beginning 5% of the book. It was about the private keyword placed in front of a function in a class. He doesn't understand what that keyword does. What he says contradicts what Apple's documentation for Swift says on Apple's developer website.

This book spends too much time and effort on what not to do. Makes it very confusing for a beginner.

What a great, great book! I've been following Thomas' work for awhile. I've seen it on Castle, in League of S.T.E.A.M. videos and Abney Park videos. He does incredible work, but while I'm very smart, I'm not very handy....to say the least. I bought his first book and while it was chock filled with great ideas and explained how to do them, I didn't have the tools or the skillset to build any of the things, even the simple things in his book.THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT. It's very simple projects that you can make with crafters foam, foam core boards, exacto knives, small things that cost just a few dollars at any crafts store and DUCT tape! That, I can do. One of the projects uses two liter bottles spray painted for jet packs. My daughters and I have started on these projects and found that we can start AND finish these projects. They're crazy good projects with step by step instructions, a storyline to go along with it and great illustrations by Phil Foglio.One of the projects shows you how to build a harness so that you can put steampunk wings or a rocket pack on it. Another project is steampunk wings. After completing the project, my daughters want to do NEW wings in pink and purple and other bright colors for non-steampunk projects. They're very excited about this. (While they love steampunk, unlike Daddy, they don't think *every* project needs to be steampunk).If you're new to steampunk and want to try your hand at building instead of just buying things, this is the BEST book out there. These projects are realistic, can be completed and really, really look great.I'd write more, but my daughters and I are going back to building something new now.

Having already purchased his previous book I was wondering how this book would be. It has projects aimed at either younger readers (teens or smart pre-teens) and/or adults with limited skills. (his previous book is more adult types of projects ... as far a skill sets) It is well worth the money and a valuable book in my collection. I've been collecting "parts" and one of these days will actually make something.Rather than work with real leather he shows a way to make imitation leather that is quite believable for projects that will not see heavy use. Instead of real rivets he shows you how to use paper fasteners to get the same effect. There are complete patterns in the back of the book to help you along, and (of course) complete instructions for the non-technical among us. Some of the projects will need to be re-sized if made for an adult.As a "starter book" for steampunk projects this is an ideal choice.

My wife and I are getting into the Steampunk culture. In fact, one of our granddaughters wants us to go to ComicCon with her this September, in costume of course. While we have picked up several different Steampunk books on costumes and accessories, this book focuses on the "Cheap but easy and still looks good" approach, concentrating on inexpensive supplies like cardboard, paint, glue and lots (and lots) of craft foam, and still getting a good looking product in the end. The fact that the Steampunk accessories are interwoven with a story just adds to the charm of the book. Not to mention I've long been a fan of Phil Foglio's Girl Genius online comic. If you like Steampunk (or want to find out if you like Steampunk), be sure to check it out.

Steampunk Adventurer's Guide is geared to a wide age range, which makes sense since Steampunk attracts a wide audience, including kids. The chapters are tied together with an adventure story (Phil Foglio is involved in that part) that draw you into an alternate history world based on steampower. You might think the projects wouldn't be of interest to adults, but you'd be wrong. It delves into making goggles, nerf gun conversion, armor, and much more -- all sorts of projects of interest to Steampunks of all ages -- but made accessible to younger minds as well as adults -- all without being dumbed down. This is an excellent introduction to the world of making.The discussion in Chapter 2 and various bits of commentary throughout the book on materials and tools are useful not for just Steampunk projects but could easily be applied to other types of projects. The instructions are clear and the hints invaluable. I've always appreciated people who were willing to explain not just how, but why.There's also some nifty stuff at the end of the book, like the measurements conversion table, as well as reading and viewing recommendations for folks who are new to Steampunk and would like to learn more about it. I have to admit that when I first got this book I was disappointed by the choice of materials ( foam and adhesive tapes ) for the projects presented.I had previously bought Thomas Willefords "Steampunk Gear, Gadgets, and Gizmos: A Maker's Guide to Creating Modern Artifacts" which features projects made mostly of metal, leather, etc.On reflection I found my initial assessment unfair as the two books are aimed at different age groups. "Steampunk Gear, Gadgets, and Gizmos" is written for an adult audience and the skills and tools required reflect that."The Steampunk Adventurers Guide" projects are tailored towards a much younger adventurer and would be great projects for a parent to build with their child.The book is written as a steampunk adventure story and the project instructions are inserted into the book whenever the young adventurers build the gadgets to help them in their quest.Nice book for the younger steampunk fan who likes to build stuff.

Great book my son is eager to see what happens with the frog. Repeative so this is a must for early language learners.

The patterned text and predictable pictures (for the next animal encounter)are excellent for young listeners and beginning readers. The color/blackand white pages also have a predictable pattern. After teaching kindergarten for over31 years, I've never found a group of children that didn't quickly chime in,"Jump, Frog, Jump." This is a favorite book to share. It is also fun to dramatize.

Perfect for toddlers language development--point to pictures, find the frog, or read the text for older children.

Classic book that's very cute! My husband loved this book when he was young, so we purchased it for our 2 young children and they love it just as much as daddy!! They love saying the "jump frog jump" part in the book. This book is fun and very entertaining!

Jenny married the French socialist Charles Longuet (1839-1903) and, Laura the Cuban Marxist, of French origin, Paul Lafargue (1842-1911). Eleanor, in her quest for independence, became the lover of Edward Aveling (1849-1898), a British who held a doctor degree in zoology, was dedicated to the theater and behaved as a scoundrel. Also, the family circle included Friedrich Engels (1820-1895), the millionaire and unconditional friend, whose economic support was vital for all in the most unfortunate moments of life; Helene Demuth (1820-1890), housekeeper and nanny, who managed most family affairs while Karl and Jenny were engaged in the cause of socialism; and, Frederick Demuth (1851-1929), the unrecognized son of Marx, who survived all other members of the clan. As if that were not enough, the research of Ms. Gabriel let us know of living descendants of the Longuet-Marx family, currently residing in France.The book informs us of the loyalty of most of these family members to the central figure of Marx, and his power of decision in the life of his children. Nobody can question the effort and dedication Karl and Jenny show in the quest of providing their daughters with the best education. The struggle for the dispossessed and persecuted is embraced by all without fear of the consequences it may bring. But at the same time, we learn on some negative aspects such as Marx's inability to obtain a sustainable income; his addiction to alcohol leading him to suffer from liver cirrhosis, and the suicide committed by daughters Laura and Eleanor.Few investigators have carried out such an exhaustive work as this by Ms. Gabriel, which has allowed her to clarify or question some facts stated as definitive in Marx's life. The photographs with their legends emphasize important characteristics of the individuals or places illustrated. I have read several biographies about Marx and texts on his political theories. At the end of my reading, I believe this book should serve as an excellent start for those who are beginning to take an interest on the subject.

At some point in (what I choose to call) my eduction the names of Marx and Lenin became so linked that I considered them contemporaries. Pals who together brought about the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, waving the hot-off-the-press Communist Manifesto.Not so. Not only did the two never meet, Marx died in 1883 -- over 30 years before the 1917 uprising. And the Manifesto itself was written by Marx in 1850 to little acclaim.So "Love and Capital" was instructive on the level of getting some facts straight, as well as telling the story of Karl and Jenny Marx and their children.Marx was a radical intellectual all his life who eked out a living writing for leftist publications and serving as a kind of clearing house for would-be European revolutionaries.The family moved around Europe, sometimes exiled from France or Germany because of their radical ideas, until finally settling in London. For example, Marx thought capitalism was a stage of economic development necessary in order to do away with material scarcity; only when that happened could it be possible for socialism to come into being. The USSR, a totalitarian state that suppressed personal freedom would have been abhorrent to Marx, in no way what he would consider a socialist state.It's unfortunate that Marx has been so infamously connected with the Russian revolution. During his life he didn't see socialism as a likely event in Russia and he was surprised when his work was translated into Russian and was so popular with the Russian emigres is Europe.(Alas, it is not uncommon for the ideas of Big Thinkers to be taken over to justify the actions of power seekers. Lenin, Stalin and those that followed used a twisted understanding of Marx to justify their totalitarian society just as an incomplete reading of Adam Smith is still used to justify capitalism.)The most significant take-away from this book for me was getting a better perspective of the last 250 years. It was about 60 years from the American and French revolutions to 1848 when all over Europe there erupted rebellion and riots against the status quo. The uprisings were crushed. From then to the Bolshevik revolution was about 70 years. Another 70 years had to then elapse before the soviet world collapsed.It takes time for ideas and movements (even the misuse of ideas) to bring forth results. I remember during Occupy Wall Street when police could with impunity spray pepper gas into the faces of shackled protesters. The import of that event is probably decades from understanding.

Amazon shows this as an "updated" version of the South Beach Diet, but it has nothing to do with cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston, as far as I saw. The recipes contained in this book contain sugar. One recipe which feeds 2-3 servings has three (3) cups of sugar. When I saw this I reviewed this diet without going to the actual site. Refined sugar is on the DO NOT EAT list.

A lot of the recipes do NOT make sense since ingredients and recipe do not match! One recipe on smoked salmon sandwich then replaced salmon with ham half the way. And it is not just one occasion. Moreover it is NOT the Southbeach diet, just stick with the author. This one is a joke!

This book is great for anyone who wants to jump start a healthy life style....bought it for my Dad, he loves it and is losing unwanted pounds and feeling great. My younger teenage cousin who is overweight also has started reading the book and doing the diet, and also has lost a significant amount of weight considering the short amount of time she has been doing it. So I love this book........it may be tough to follow the diet at first but its worth it.

Where the Heart Beats is a sometimes informative, soft-centered cultural history of the pre- and post-Fluxus period. It is crucially mistitled because its centerpiece, John Cage, works with his mind not his heart. He himself pridefully puts it that way many times in the volume. Nor is he a Zen master, as the author claims; Zen masters don't talk incessantly and insist on being in charge and react splenetically when their "music" is unappreciated. When Cage says Zen things, he is usually quoting or paraphrasing his teacher DT Suzuki. John Cage was an inventive composer, and influential in certain milieux. C'est tout.

Finally someone took the time and research to write about the full life JOhn Cage had. Not just to focus on one thing about him. The problem with writing about just one piece of who John was means you leave out all the reasons he created his art. Everything about him from his upbringing, personal life, spiritual journey to mental health was part of the musical pieces we all enjoy to this day. You cannot truly write about him without writing about everything.By the end of this book you discover John Cage and end with a much better understanding of each piece of music he created. You will feel like you actually know him. It is an amazing book, very well written and laid out.Very insightful.

Clearly written with just a bit of extraneous rmeandering this book had me "So maybe that's why I favor this direction rather than that in the art world..I never connected the two before or thought about connecting them." Of course I am a Californian and was familiar with the names, art, music, dance and Zen Center of San Fransico all of which I referred to and put into context for me. A definite buy whether you like John Cage's stuph or not, have an interest in the influence of Buddhism in the 20th century on American creativity.

Such a beautiful book that captures the essence of Cage better than anything else I have read. This work has put an exclamation point at the end of a sentence that has run on in my subconscious for years. Not only does it give a candid look into Cage's life, but also gives a fascinating glimpse into post WWII art during an era where the United States had become a creative hot spot for European artists escaping potential life under the Nazi regime.

A slow, deep read, takes time and patience. I bought it for a recommended text for a multimedia, digital arts class.

Okay, this was freakin hilarious! I read it out loud to my mom and we were cracking up at these realistic discussions of the "joys" of raising children. This is NOT a book for people looking for sweet stories of perfect children. And there are a couple of swear words in the book (in each paragraph? :-) ), so if you have a delicate ear, this book may not be for you! But for the rest of us, it's wonderful to know that there are other mommies out there who have suffered through some of these wonderful experiences! Thank-you, Baby Sideburns, for this fun read!

Ok, I would like to first say that I think Karen Alpert (aka Baby Sideburns) is hilarious. As a mom of a 2 year old, I am glad that someone else also is going through the same things that I am. It really makes me feel better. With that being said, I was really disappointed in this book. I follow Baby Sideburns on Facebook, and when she posts stories, I usually always go and read them on her blog. There are very few of her posts that I haven't read.This book would be great for someone who didn't follow her or read her blog because most all of the stories in this book are the same ones that she's written on her blog. Because of that, I was reading things that I had already read. I'm really disappointed. I thought that these would be all new things that she was writing about, but it wasn't.This would make a fantastic gift for a new parent, or just one who doesn't actively read her blog.

My dad has always said the best jokes/humor is funny because there's an element of truth to it! Well this book is hilarious! On multiple occasions I shared excerpts of this book with fellow parents I know because I knew that particular excerpt applied to their life and they would find it funny! On multiple occasions this book spoke to me & made me laugh out loud, including times I had to hold it in because my daughter was sleeping next to me and good grief I didn't want to wake her! So, in short, if you are or were a parent of a toddler or young child this book is for you, especially for moms because there are excerpts about childbirth and husbands that moms can relate to! However, all parents will enjoy this book because they can relate to things like the annoyance that is Caillou or the joys of owning a minivan, just to name a couple. It's a fast read and I highly recommend it!

As a parent of 3 kids, I heart Karen Alpert (AKA Baby Sideburns) and her willingness to tell it like it is. My kids are teenagers now but I very clearly remember situations very similar to those Karen describes. Since I'm on the other side, I can look back through rose-colored glasses, however I know I would have appreciated Karen's "tell it like it is" style even more when I was going through it all myself. I sincerely hope she keeps writing when her kids are teens- I can only imagine what they will be up to!

Absolutely hilarious! I found myself nodding along and annoyingly reading sections to my husband, as I snorted through laughter! I absolutely love my kids, so much that it hurts sometimes. But I felt like a horrible mother feeling like I wanted to run away sometimes. Karen speaks to me, she says all of the things I'm screaming in my head, and makes me feel like I'm not the only one! A friend actually saw this book on sale and sent the link in a group text to a bunch of us with little ones. I immediately bought it and I'm so glad I did! A little comic relief for this mom, that was completely needed!

there are several places that you should not attempt to read this book.1. the sidelines of your kids soccer practice, because as you are laughing so hard you are crying, other parents are looking at you quizzically since little Johnny just got kicked and is crying.2. the waiting room outside your kids CCD class... there are a lot of pictures that make us baby-sideburns fans crack up repeatedly, while some shall-we-say less fun people will purse their lips disapprovingly.3. The back row of jury duty. The court officer will confiscate your book, although you will definitely see him smirking after lunch because he totally read it too and thought it was HILARIOUS.For real, Karen Alpert hits the nail on the head with this book the same as she does with every blog. She is funny, clever, witty, REAL, and best of all just GETS how the rest of us moms feel most of the time. I am totally going to buy 20 copies and give them out as Christmas gifts. I am still deciding about using the vagina cupcakes for Christmas baking.... :-)

I laughed so hard I snorted in parts of this book. She really does say the things most, if not all mothers, think at one time or another but are too scared? prime and proper? politically correct? to admit..The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because of the annoying overuse of the "f" word. It would have been just as funny without it, and all it did for me was distract from the flow of reading. Come on Karen, that kind of language isn't necessary to be funny.

Let's be honest here...this author breaks it down for real moms in a way that makes you feel much less crazy. You know that you're one of a community of other moms who love their kids like crazy, but are also losing their absolute S#%! on any given day. I cannot adequately convey my love for this book!

Something holds the man back from striking out at the nurse and doctor who helped to cause her death. Later on at home, a dream shows him that a cycle was completed with his daughter's death. Had he struck out, the pattern would have continued, with more hatred and more deaths in the future. He still grieves for hs daughter, but alongside the grief a sense of peace and liberation begins to fill his heart.In a similar way each of our experiences in life carries within it spiritual lessons and spiritual blessings both large and small.
