Crisp writing, engaging illustrations, and sweets—this is a recipe worth keeping.” —Kirkus ReviewsPraise for LADY PANCAKE & SIR FRENCH TOAST:“Kearney's illustrations kick butter, with full command of the story's arc. The bean avalanche is a trippy wonder that will be replayed at many dinner tables. The vibrant colors on simple backgrounds keep the action at the forefront, while the acrobatic rhymes tackle the next hurdle. . . . Teachers and students alike will delight in this food fight. This is book two of a series of three. The first book "Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast", which my grand children loved, introduced interesting refrigerator characters. This second book "The Case of the Stinky Stench" revisits those characters but also adds several new ones. We are looking forward to the third book "Mission Defrostable" when it is available in September. The authors rhyming writing style really have my grand children laughing.

I may love this books a bit more than my son! Such a fun read, that creates a dialogue about food.We now own both books in our home library and they are our two favorites. Great story line and great vocabulary! Lots of good words that my son is learning from this quick-witted author. Look forward to the next one!

Not really what I'd hoped. It's a so-so book I waited a long time to get.

My 6 year-old yelled with joy when she opened this package. Delightful story!

Our 2nd grade class LOVED this book! They wanted to read it again and again. It's a must have for all classrooms!

My 4 yo and I are obsessed! love, love, love the adventures of Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast! Hilarious and fun, great pictures.

We love this book at home! My son is almost 6 and he just loves lady pancake and sir french toast taking him through an exciting smorgasbord adventure! !! The illustrations are beautiful and the story is soooooooo fun and well written! The 'miss steak' pun has me rolling with laughter every time I read it.

My daughter and I really enjoyed this book. The rhymes were well done. They flowed without feeling forced. The story was fun and unique and the illustrations were vibrant and complimented the words. I would definitely read this author's other books and share this book with others.

Clear, concise. solid coverage of a core technology for web development in java. This book is at the same time a useful reference and an easy tutorial. Covers the EL scripting language, base, iteration, xml, sql, networking actions.Complete, easy to read and with working example code for EVERY concept. D.Geary and M Hall are the reference authors in theServlet-JSP World. If you are doing any kind of development using JSP you need this book. 'nuff said.

On the sequence of steps to learn, JSTL falls after servlets and JSP and before JSF and Struts and other MVC frameworks. The book is good with helping me understand how tag libs work in general. It goes over some default ones that come with JSTL. The material is not too complicated, and the text is not too dense. Light reading.

Last year I built a website that used Java Server Pages to dynamically generate most of the pages. It worked well, but was very kludgy. JSPs invariably mix the HTML display code with some of the internal data logic. Through a judicious use of theModel-View-Controller paradigm, I was able to reduce this mixing. But a minimal amount was still inevitable. This is a common experience with JSPs. You end up with files containing java code and HTML. Ugly and brittle. Plus, it calls upon two areas of expertise. A separation of the two would be much morerobust, and allow people with skills in only one of these areas to still contribute to the development. In answer to this, Sun has been refining its Standard Tag Library. Specifically, it now has an expression language that is a programming language in its own right and is comprehensively described in this book, which bears Sun's official impramateur. Programmers versed in other languages can quickly absorb this. Thru it, you can easily write code to access Java Beans and other java programs. Plenty of clear examples are provided.Of interest to several will be how to use STL to hook up to back end SQL databases; transferring from them into webpages and transmitting user changes back into the databases. The author also covers the important case of interacting with XML, which is now a de facto standard for data interchange. Nor does he neglect describing issues of internationalisation. Practical for those who have to support several languages. The sum of all these is to make this book very useful for those of you needing to build JSPs in business applications. I do wish I had this book last year!

The JSP Standard Tag Library is designed to simplify many of the difficult tasks encountered while creating JSPs. This book covers the new built-in tags and the expression language which are part of JSTL. The book describes itself as a "definitive" guide and that fairly well sums it up. JSTL is covered in excellent detail with lots of examples and sample code. The book is divided into three parts. The first part introduces JSTL and discusses the JSTL expression language. Examples of proper usage as well as common errors are shown. The next part covers the tags themselves (referred to as actions). This part is split over several chapters including chapters on conditional actions, iteration actions, i18n actions, database actions, and XML actions. Each action is covered in detail with at least one example of its usage. The final section is a short reference covering all the actions. Overall, I found this book to be very well written guide to JSTL. I think most Servlet/JSP developers will find this to be an excellent resource for learning JSTL. There were a couple of places in the book that I found the author's explanations a little confusing but overall he does an excellent job of helping to understand how to properly use JSTL.

I like Geary and have his Swing book ( which is in my opinion the definitive tome on the subject ). He's a good author. This new outing covers the tags quite well and with some good practical insights. There are a few things that I just would have done differently had I been the writer, but I liked the formatting and I18N chapters, perhaps the best ones out of the lot. However, there is not even a mention of the JSP 1.2 XML syntax or how to use JSTL with it, which is [imho] a pretty glaring oversight. In the sample code none of the beans implement 'Serializable' which according to the javaDocs, is a bean requirement. The DTD the samples point to is erroneous. You have to type the samples in because the site from where you are supposed to be able to download them doesn't exist. For someone who was so meticulous in his previous books, I find this one written by a different Geary. Maybe this is the case. But it did get me on top of the JSTL pretty quickly and that gets 3 stars. There is not much else out there on this subject at the moment.

One of the best books i found on JSTL. Provides in-depth knowledge & extensive examples of JSTL.This book helps us to understand why, where and how to use JSTL tags. follows the typical MVC pattern [ a clear separation of View from Model]Though, I am not a great fan of SQL, XML tags, the Core & I18N JSTL tags are not only valuable but also easy to use. Now we could have non-Java programmers to design all of your JSP pages.[our last project leveraged JSTL/ Struts/ Tiles frameworks]

I have seen David Geary speak and have read his writing many times and there is no one I know that makes JSP more interesting or more understandable. Core JSTL: Mastering the JSP Standard Tag Library is easily the best book on the subject I have read, or used in practice, or recommended to others. It is clear, concise, and logical. Trust me on this one... you will be a fan of Geary and his books after reading this one.

Ok, how cool is it that an author wants to engage with her readers. Amy Krouse Rosenthal does just that with her newest book TEXTBOOK: Not Exactly a Memoir. Throughout this witty banter of a book, Rosenthal shares moments where the reader can literally text her. She provides a subject so that you know there is going to be a reply and assuming some form of further conversation about what she has written. My favorite one is she hopes to have readers join together and who knows, maybe form a group of sorts. Like one big book club made up of digi-pals who might aspire to form a deep friendship, or take a trip together – the world will be your oyster thanks to Krouse Rosenthal. It’s like Textbook.com. Love it.Her ideas are brilliant – she gives you little exercises of pure delight. So simple yet so powerful. I found myself highlighting everything, taking furious notes. The ‘experiments’ are not just sweet but fun. And funny.Rosenthal delivers amusing wisdom of the everyday, and pinpoints things that we all think about but probably don’t write down unless we keep a journal and take the time to re-read it or talk out loud and laugh at ourselves. Yes, there is texting and yes, we post on Instagram and laugh at our witty selves. But somehow sharing all those sweet, tender and hilarious moments with others in a way that is meaningful. And, not just relegated to your kid’s first day of school adorableness (although I know he/she is so cute!), your dog’s latest trick or that incredible cocktail that you must post, but real life goodness – things that you wish for, things that you can try to achieve, observations in the small things that really matter, something that you find so funny or so coincidental or so truly astounding you need anyone who will listen to know about this because it is that amazing that it might start a movement.Krouse Rosenthal is the friend you want to have and the writer you want to keep writing. Jump on the TEXTBOOK bandwagon.

Textbook is so many things, including a cute play on words. I've never read anything quite like it and maybe because I am such a fan of AKR's writing, I loved all of it.I bought this book shortly before the author died and finished it after attending a celebration of her life in Chicago, which may explain why it was so very moving to me to read her last work.I recommend reading Textbook with your phone in hand, and please follow all the text prompts and links. Especially, listen to the soundtrack while reading her end notes and keep tissues handy.I'm sad this book isn't more popular and sadder that Amy's voice is gone from this world. She left us a lovely and inspirational goodbye letter.#Makethemostofyourtimehere

Whoever left the review to "buy two copies because you'll be compelled to give one away" is telling the truth! I eventually bought two copies so I can freely loan one copy to someone without hounding them like a meth addict needing a fix.Amy's writing is so personal and qualifies as a "light read," yet her thoughts and observations are moving and delve into the deep issues of humanity. I learned so much from this book, not only about Amy's life, but about my own, and what I want my impact to be on others. Her unique structuring of this book inspired me to write my own "sort-of" travel memoir, freeing me from the restrictions of formatting. You can read this book in a day, but you may want to savor it for a lifetime. In terms of timing: I'd just read about the Purple Flower moment when her NYT's piece in Modern Love was published and I'd found out she'd passed away. That became my Purple Flower moment. I honestly cried. Even though I didn't know her, I had felt her impression on this world like a huge thumbprint, and I believe the world would be a much better place with more AKRs living in it.Thus: read this book. Love better, laugh better, and take heart that humanity still holds such glittering beauty.

Although I don't typical read memoirs, this book is so wholly original that calling it a memoir seems rather limiting. It's literally a "text book," meaning you can text the author, or an automated version of the author, and interact with her via additional material that she sends you, my favorite of which, a piece of music, accompanied the very beautiful ending. There are also opportunities to go online and view galleries of art, writing and other ephemera from other readers, and to contribute your own. I think of this as the perfect Sunday book, a read to cherish without an agenda and with time on your hands to go done a lot of unexplored and unexpected paths.

Amy Krouse Rosenthal has a special ability to connect with people and put into words life's joy and meaning without telling people what to do. Her work reminds me of what an angel would say to me at the gate. In a way it is a reflection on life in a way people don't really talk about daily. This is unlike anything I have ever read! And the last page and the last words hurt knowing she has now past....goodbye, I love you, thank you. Thank you for reminding me what actually matters in life.

Please read and buy a copy or two to share with a friend or stranger! And get ready for April 29th this year and every year to tell someone you love him or her and do something lovely for Amy's birthday and in her honor. And do it for you.

This book was absolutely delightful in every way. Simple, understated, relevant, poignant. I loved the randomness of it -- I am a big fan of Rosenthal's "Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life," as well. And the interactive texting element took it to a whole new level. Highly recommended.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Amy Krause Rosenthal! The beautiful phrases, ideas, and sentences presented in such a creative way were so fun to read. I had so many laugh-out-loud moments. My only complaint? I wish the book was longer :)

Excellent Book! We all read it in my team as a Team Work Excercice, the results are being seen. RECOMMENDED!!!!

Truman, by David McCullough

Amazon.com Review

This warm biography of Harry Truman is both an historical evaluation of his presidency and a paean to the man's rock-solid American values. Truman was a compromise candidate for vice president, almost an accidental president after Roosevelt's death 12 weeks into his fourth term. Truman's stunning come-from-behind victory in the 1948 election showed how his personal qualities of integrity and straightforwardness were appreciated by ordinary Americans, perhaps, as McCullough notes, because he was one himself. His presidency was dominated by enormously controversial issues: he dropped the atomic bomb on Japan, established anti-Communism as the bedrock of American foreign policy, and sent U.S. troops into the Korean War. In this winner of the 1993 Pulitzer Prize, McCullough argues that history has validated most of Truman's war-time and Cold War decisions.

From Publishers Weekly

Cracker-barrel plain in speech and looks, this seemingly ordinary man turned out to be one of our most dynamic presidents. It was Harry S. Truman who ordered the atomic bomb dropped, halted Communists in Turkey and Greece, initiated the Marshall Plan, NATO and the Berlin Airlift, ordered desegregation of the armed forces, established the CIA and the Defense Department, committed U.S. forces to Korea and upheld the principle of civilian control over the military by firing Gen. Douglas MacArthur. McCullough ( Mornings on Horseback ) has written a surefooted, highly satisfying biography of the 33rd president, one that not only conveys in rich detail Truman's accomplishments as a politician and statesman, but also reveals the character and personality of this constantly-surprising man--as schoolboy, farmer, soldier, merchant, county judge, senator, vice president and chief executive. The book relates how Truman (1884-1972) overcame the stigma of business failure and debt (as well as the accusation that he was "bellboy" to Kansas City's Pendergast machine) and acquired a reputation for honesty, reliability and common sense. McCullough pays considerable attention to Truman's family, especially his fervent and touching courtship of Bess Wallace, the idolized love of his life. Her mother never felt Truman was good enough for her daughter, even after he became president. The book's re-creation of the 1948 presidential campaign, during which Newsweek 's poll of 50 political writers predicted that the incumbent would lose the election to Thomas Dewey, is the most complete account of that surprise victory to date. The book is an impressive tribute to a man whose brisk cheerfulness and self-confidence were combined with a God-fearing humility; a great and good man who, in McCullough's opinion, was a great president. David McCullough's Pulitzer Prize winning biography "Truman" is undoubtedly the best Presidential biography I've read in recent years. Written in a graceful and powerfully eloquent style, it is meticulously researched, and accurately captures the essence of the man who was the 33rd President of the United States.McCullough challenges a commonly held view of history that Harry S Truman was nothing more than a common man of mediocre abilities who became President almost by accident, and owed his political success to his loyalty to the Democratic party and the Kansas City political bosses. By tracing the life of this self-made man - a farmer, artillery captain during World War I, haberdasher, local politician, U.S. Senator, Vice President, and ultimately President of the United States - the author acquaints the reader with a highly intelligent, competent and complex man. Here is seen the highly principled politician whose ability to judge the character of others enabled him to select outstanding men like Dean Acheson and George Marshall to serve in his administration; a Chief Executive capable of making some of the most momentous decisions of the twentieth century, such as ordering the use of the atomic bomb against Japan in 1945, integrating the Armed Forces in 1948, and firing General Douglas MacArthur in 1951. But, here also is seen a man who remained loyal to personal friends and Democratic party bosses and tolerant of their often disreputable activities; and who, in a fit of petty anger, authored a threatening letter to a music critic who wrote unfavorably about his daughter."Truman" is above all a fair and balanced portrait of one of the most unique and greatest of American Presidents. In my view, this extraordinarily well written book is destined to be the biography of Harry S Truman against which all others will be measured. Highly recommended!

I have read many of David McCullough's books, only two more to go, but this one was the absolute best. He brought Truman to life for me. He made that whole era, WW! into the Korean War come alive. Every character, every scene, was like I knew exactly what he was talking about. His love of Bess and then his daughter...his protection of the privacy of his family....his loyalty...this was the best read for me and, believe me, I loved The Great Bridge and the story of the Panama Canal...Path Between the Seas....but Truman was so very special. If you have a love of history you will enjoy this book from beginning to end and don't let the length of it discourage you from starting it because it just flies by. When I finished it I felt that I had laid to rest my very best friend. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

David McCullough's Truman is a long book but well worth the read. It covers Truman's life from his ancestors on the frontier to his death and everything in between. McCullough ties the history of Truman's ancestors, childhood, family life, farm experience, business attempts, World War I military service, political life to explain what Truman did and why as President. It also delves into Truman's political campaigns on all levels, which I found truly fascinating. This really is an informative book that transformed my understanding of Harry Truman and the Truman presidency. McCullough's writing style is vivid and engaging, it really is hard to put down once you get started.I couldn't help drawing parallels between the present and the past while reading this book - particularly with the 2016 Presidential campaign and how Clinton and Trump campaigned compared to how Truman campaign and our current problems in Korea. I couldn't help contrasting the personalities of Truman and Trump, either.I highly recommend Truman; it's a fascinating, informative, well written biography of a President who was in office during a highly important, trans-formative period of United States History.

Probably everything's been said about this book that I want to say, but I have to say that I wonder how I went all these years without realizing what an engaging historian and writer Mr. McCullough is. Truman reads like a novel. As a youngster, I used to look at pictures of Truman, hear him speak, and wonder how such a seemingly drab little man could be our president. So if my husband hadn't already read and recommended the book, I probably wouldn't have even started it. But after racing through this biography -- by no means a hagiography -- I long for a candidate like Truman in the 2016 election. Moreover, it was a kind of nostalgia trip for me, since I was brought up by a father whose basic values paralleled Truman's, and many of his now old-fashioned speech mannerisms reminded me of the way people spoke when I was growing up. I'll certainly be moving on to the author's other books even if I don't think the topic would appeal to me.

I’ve been on a big presidential kick lately with the 2016 Presidential Election around a month away. So with that in mind, I will offer my thoughts on Truman. On the positive, I think he did a magnificent job covering Harry Truman as far as giving the reader the broad experience of his life before, during, and after the presidency. For my money, you can’t get any better than the sections on the events leading up to the firing of Douglas Macarthur and his defeat of Thomas Dewey in 1948.I felt like while it was a well-written biography that kept me engaged through 1000 pages, I felt like it reinforced the popular image of Harry Truman as a plain spoken man of principles who knew how to make the tough decisions and made them. While there is certainly nothing wrong with it, it felt like anything that didn’t compete was glossed over like his association with the Pendergast Machine in Missouri or the depth of his feelings for FDR, I thought this could’ve added a little more depth because many people already understand the popular perception of Harry Truman.Well written, but largely reinforcing the “popular” image of Harry Truman.

I learned allot about this president!

Danielle Thorne has written a short book aimed at young adults, but the question she raises in this series is one all should ponder, - “People that changed the Course of History.” 250 years after his birth, is Andrew Jackson worthy to be included in this series? Her biography demonstrates, but should have stressed more, that our notions of the “wild West” - Texas, Montana, California, Colorado, Wyoming, those notions, those values, those battles with savages of various colors, occurred in the 'wild west' of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, etc. Indians massacring white settlers, settlers slaughtering Indians, both sides suspicious of the other. But in the early wild West in the lands to become Tennessee and Kentucky, white men were hot headed (many still are), and a few words might be deemed an insult and a duel could, and sometimes did result. Thorne notes that seconds in duels could try to resolve the disputes, sometimes with both antagonists shooting up in the air, allowing both duelists to save face, and perhaps their lives. But sometimes the duels were resolved in blood, and Andrew Jackson nearly lost an arm (in the end, he gained a bullet in that limb), and Jackson also killed an opponent in one such duel. Because of the many films depicting the American West our images of such gunfights at the corral or at high noon or in hundreds of other films and early popular television series, we rarely think of the same attitudes and activities occurring in the early wild west of North Carolina or Kentucky. The recurring themes lasted as long as there was a frontier. The more formal duels of Hamilton and Burr and Jackson and Charles Dickinson may have been replaced by simpler rules – or no rules, but the basic theme remained the same. Another point was the brutalities and meanness of the wars on what is now American soil. But in the case of the British against the colonial rebels, there is the general question of how does any occupying army treat rebels who oppose them? Americans may recall TV news of American soldiers in Vietnam setting afire the huts of peasants believed to be Vietcong. Older films portray Nazi occupiers of Italy who might kill 10 or more civilians for each German soldier slain by underground resisters. Yet, it is still a shock to read how a British officer treats a teenage Andrew Jackson and his aunt Jane when the Redcoats are informed that they are a rebel household. Jackson and his aunt watch as the British broke every one of her dishes and broke every leg on her furniture. But when the officer commanded Jackson to wipe the mud from his boots, the youth refused. The officer's reply was swift – he raised his sword to slash it down on Jackson's head. The boy raised his arm to deflect the blow, suffering a deep wound to his hand, yet still receiving a swipe to the face that would leave a scar. However, in the country of occupiers, Jane's home was not burnt, she was not raped, and Andrew would live on to fight again with hatred of the British seared into his scars. Because the author's intended audience is young adults, she will occasionally include a definition unnecessary for adults, but sometimes her writing is simply perplexing, as ,”Weatherford led that attack on the massacre on the settlement,...”(72) which could be interpreted in opposite ways, and the rest of the sentence is even more confusing. Or “At this time [the election of 1828], a candidate had to win the majority of electoral votes,...”(98) As it is still the case that a candidate must win the majority of electoral votes, her writing here is confusing. Similarly, when discussing Jackson's problems with his Cabinet, she includes a Fast Fact telling that the President appoints the cabinet and meets with the leaders of various departments, and they consist of the “heads of ...Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security,...”(106) As none of these positions existed during the Jackson Presidency, why not simply list those in Jackson's Cabinet to avoid confusion? In her discussion of the background to the outbreak of the War of 1812 Thorne totally neglects to mention that many Americans hoped to conquer Canada with the onset of the war.(84) Thorne shows a modern blinder when she writes concerning those who were clearly very religious, like Jackson, and what she perceives as the contradiction of them being both religious and slave owners. “Slavery...raised guilty questions to men in the South, like Jackson, who considered themselves religious.”(135) While many discovered in their religion grounds to condemn slavery, Thorne seems unaware that slavery is mentioned in the Bible, never condemned by Jesus, and a runaway was urged to return to his master by Paul. Many in the South (and elsewhere) saw no contradiction between slavery and Christianity. More troubling to the modern is Jackson's views on race. During the General's appeal for support to defend New Orleans from the British, Jackson included an appeal to the Free Men of Color (and to pirates, too). He included friendly Indians in his campaign against the hostile (Creek) Red Sticks, and was happy to receive it. But when it came to removing, even the “civilized” Indians from Georgia and Alabama westward to what would become Indian Territory (today's Oklahoma), “Jackson made his feelings very clear. He called them savage and barbaric...their governments were 'crude institutions.'”(137) Thorne quotes historian Robert Remini: “Jackson believed that Indians belonged to a lower order of humanity and that the federal government had the right to deal with them as it saw fit.”(137) Thorne concludes that Jackson “felt America and the white man were more important than people of other colors.”(146) Strangely, Thorne does not mention the very influential Age of Jackson by Arthur Schlesinger in her text or her bibliography. Of course, Thorne does recognize Jackson's importance in US history. Not only did he put together a rag-tag army in winter 1814-15 that would defeat overwhelmingly the British veterans of the Napoleonic wars, but the British outnumbered his forces 3 to 1. Yet, the British casualties were catastrophic, and included their commander, General Edward Pakenham. With the British failure to capture New Orleans, their empire lost all hope of wresting New Orleans from the US, of blocking American expansion to the Mississippi River and beyond, and of promoting further Indian resistance to American settlement and growth. Thus Jackson's victory allowed the natural thrust of American progress to swell over the mountains down the rivers and valleys and solidify. Moreover, Jackson's exploits in Florida crushed Indian resistance there and halted Anglo-Spanish schemes to disrupt the American south and southwest expansion. Rightly hailed as a hero after his New Orleans victory, Jackson would enter national politics. One may find that Schlesinger exaggerated when he portrayed Jackson's Presidency as the New Deal of the 19th century, but Thorne conceded he ended the era of the aristocratic Virginia dynasties.(95) Jackson roused many more Americans to enter the electorate and essentially re-create a sector of Jefferson's Democratic Republican Party as the Democratic Party. While his personality and policies were popular with a majority of the people, there were some who detested him, calling him tyrant and king. While President, a sailor slapped Jackson, and another man shot a pistol at him, but it misfired.(121) Jackson not only created the modern Democratic Party, with his position on forced Indian resettlement and being a slave owner, it was clear he viewed America basically as a white man's country and the Democratic Party as the party of the white race. That seemed so evident that decades later, in the election of 1868, the Democrats' official campaign song included lyrics: “We are the white man's party.” For decades Democrats honored their founders with Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinners – speeches and fundraisers. These were major annual events held throughout the country. But as “anti-racism,” and later, “anti-whitism,” became centerpieces of the post-1960s progressive Democratic Party, both Jefferson and Jackson have been lambasted as slave owners. Both are now deemed as embarrassments to many of the new Democratic Party leadership. Finally, there is one episode that should have been included in this book. In 1840 Jackson returned to New Orleans for the 25th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans, and laid a corner stone for a monument. Jackson died in 1845, and in 1851 Place d'Armes was renamed Jackson Square. In 1856 an equestrian statue of Jackson was placed at the center of the Jackson Square in the New Orleans French Quarter. Several identical statues were created. However, I am convinced that the photograph of the Jackson statue in Thorne's book (133) is NOT the one in New Orleans. Moreover, during the Civil War, the Confederates were far less successful in defending New Orleans than had been Jackson, and early in the war, April 1862, the largest city of the Confederacy fell to the Union naval forces under Southern-born David Farragut. The city was occupied by Yankees, and many ladies, to show their disapproval, spit on the Union soldiers. The Yankee general in charge of the Union occupation, Benjamin Butler, then issued an order that any ladies who insulted his troops were to be treated as women of the streets (prostitutes). Reaction was swift. The author of the order was now called “Beast” Butler, vilified throughout the South and in Europe. He had also forced ships coming upriver to wait to insure they were not carrying yellow fever, and there was no epidemic during Butler's reign. Modifying them only slightly, he also added a few words by Jackson to the base of the statue in Jackson Square. During the 1830s, when John Calhoun favored nullification and there was talk of secession of states from the Union, Jackson, slave owner, strongly opposed the dissolution of the nation. And said so. His words were added to the statue during the Yankee occupation to annoy the rebels - “The Union must and shall be preserved.” (Today, the Left wing in New Orleans seeks to remove the Jackson statue.) For a short book Thorne was able to discuss complex issues like Jackson's hostility toward the National Bank; his preference for state banks, maneuvers by politicians on both sides and the national economic consequences. Thorne explains these difficult concepts simply. She is good at condensing many topics about the growing nation during the Jackson era. One she might have elaborated – what happened to the sailor who slapped the President or to the man who tried to shoot him. Overall, Thorne has written a short, general appraisal of why Andrew Jackson does indeed deserve to be included in this series of people who changed the course of history.

Very interesting brief version of the life of Andrew Jackson.
