About the Author

Yochi Brandes was born in 1959 in Haifa to a family of Hassidic rabbis. Earning her BA in biblical studies and an MA in Judaic studies, Brandes taught bible and Judaism for many years. She is the author of novels and essays on biblical women-all of them best-sellers in Israel. She has been awarded the Book Publishers Association's Platinum Book Prizes for seven of her books, including The Secret Book of Kings, and the Steimatsky Prize forAkiva's Orchard. She lives outside of Tel Aviv.

For those well versed in the Bible, the author offers a story laden with twists. For those with scant knowledge of the Bible, or those who fall short of specifics, the story may confuse for though Brandes often stays close to the Biblical narrative, the author just as often derails the Bible with either subtle or grandiose changes, by way of time, place or by attributing actions of one Biblical personage to another.The novel presents a woman’s point of view. The author offers little in description of architecture of the era, either of the palace, the Temple, or the towns and little in description of foods or clothing, but concentrates almost solely on relationships.The novel, based on Kings I, primarily concerns the lives of Saul, David, Jeroboam, the split between Israel and Judah, and the animosity between the tribes of Judah and Ephraim..However entertaining for some, the author’s subversion of the Bible promoted an uproar in the Jewish community, in Israel and abroad.

This book uses stories form the bible and other known texts to tell this beautifully written story. It reads like a novel told by different main characters, all crucial to the time period of the first kings of Israel. At first we don't know who the child that narrates the first part of the book is, but we can sense that he is important. Next, Michal, the daughter of king Saul, tells her view of events and it is fascinating. This book truly brings the time period to life, and reads well and fluently. I love anything from this author that I can get my hands on.

Like The Red Tent this story uses the hints in the text to provide a new midrash on the house of Saul and the reason for the division of Israel into two Kingdoms You need some familiarity with the basic story to appreciate the nuances and creativity of the author but reading the Wikipedia entries for the four protagonists is probably enough.The book also raises many questions about the narrative of Jewish history that have many implications.

What I most enjoy about Brandes’ books is that they take brief, often cryptic, passages from classical texts, Tanakh and Mishnah in the case of The Secret Book of Kings and The Orchard, and reimagine the powerful currents and emotions behind them. In this process, she brings other times to life. Many of the characters in both books are historical. There are so many names put forward in Tanakh and so many Tannaim that it’s hard to get them straight — and there’s nothing like good novels, page-turners like these, to help fix them all in my mind. I plan to read them both again to make them all even more at home. Great reads.

Excellent retelling of the story of david and solomon from the point of view of the lost tribes and the women of israel.

This is the second book of her,s that I have read. Themore of her books that I read the more I dig into Judaism.I am really enjoying her work.

It is most interesting to read the story of the split in the kingdom from this non-traditional point of view. I had always been instructed that the rebellious northern kingdom was (basically) evil. This alternate perspective is very interesting.

Great premise - the story of David and Saul from the perspective of the Northern Kingdom. Brandes weaves a great yarn, reminding us that its the victors who write the history, so .... who knows what really happened? While I think the story stands on its own, I think its helpful to read/be familiar with the accounts in the Bible's books of Samuel and the beginning of I Kings.

My favorite book about philosophy is one called "The philosophical backstairs", this one comes a booming second. I had fun with the jokes, it made philosophy easy accessible. And to top it off, in my case, I was at the time living with a flat mate who insisted you couldn't read anything in the toilet that was of deeper spiritual content. So having this one there was a great way to circumvent him and use valuable time to read valuable and deeper content. Because the stories and jokes are short, it also was conclusive for the time spent at that location. It turned out to be a popular reason to stop by our house when in town for the necessities.

This book is totally awesome and well worth your time to purchase and READ! In today's hurry, hurry world I still like to just sit and read a real book that can teach me something I didn't know a few minutes ago. Please take the time to instill in your children or Grandchildren the joy of books! They will be much Happier Folks in the future! March 19, 2019

As a technical person, I have tried later in my life to go back and pick up a bit of the humanities -- to try to answer some of those questions we all have about life and living. I started to read and listen to some light reviews of philosophy and see if I could begin to grasp some of the basic questions and perhaps some of the answers. I am almost certain that one cannot do it by self study, but I have listened and read enough to know some of the basic ideas. And on top of that, I love the "man goes in a bar" jokes. Any book which combines two of the things I really enjoy as this book does has to move to the top of my list. When I saw this book I had to have it. I sat done and read it in about an hour and I loved it. I laughed and laughed and I recommend it to anyone looking to dip a toe into philosophy. Serious students will likely scoff at it, but for the rest of us, the ideas are here for the taking. Buy this book.

It's funny but I wouldn't recommend it for any real insights or knowledge. The book lacks structure. It gives a very high overview of different theories, but I don't see the value in this. Maybe, I was looking for something deeper.

Although I felt like a fool sitting here all by myself laughing myself to tears over jokes some of which are older than I am (and that's pretty old), I enjoyed every minute of it. And I think there was a glimmer of understanding regarding philosophy as an added treat. I wish I knew somebody who has the same mind-bend as I so I could recommend this book. Loved it!!

Very cleaver and funny, but look out you actually might learn something. I have it on my kindle and read it randomly while in Doctors reception area and love the looks on the other patients faces as I am laughing out loud ! I mean who laughs at the Doctors !?!

This book is thoroughly entertaining, while yet managing to teach some of the basics of philosophy. This isn't JUST a joke book (though the jokes are great) but you can tell that the authors actually love their subject and want you to learn something about it. You're not going to qualify for a degree in philosophy by reading this, but you're going to absorb some of the concepts and terminology and maybe even be inspired to dig deeper -- while laughing the whole way. It's a masterful piece of writing in that these guys have managed to serve a fairly substantial "meal" in the guise of a light snack -- call it an appetizer. I'd have given it five stars on the basis of entertainment, but gave it four because I wouldn't have minded a little more meat. However, I do recommend it for anyone who would enjoy a "painless" but relatively superficial introduction to philospy and I already bought one copy for a friend.

My husband thoroughly enjoyed the book as a short easy travel read. It presented philosophical perspectives with funny anecdotes to illustrate them.

Very informative yet easy read, the author has a dry sense of humor I really like. Covers everything from the costs of all types of expenses to some history of the country to customs and norms to prepare yourself for if considering living in Costa Rica. I have read this book twice and would for sure read it again if I moved to Costa Rica, it would save a lot of hassles by doing so and refreshing on some of the customs, lessons learned, ways to spend less, etc. The author even includes his email address and answered a question I sent him.

While the author has developed more patience and tolerance than many potential CR 'movers' may be able to emulate, he does a great job of describing the conditions and people he has encountered. I would have liked to see more websites listed, the good ones stay fairly current. I also would have liked to see more basic maps to help the reader understand the basic geography of his excellent descriptions. I sincerely hope he will update this book every two or three years as this clearly the best work on this topic.

Lots of good information on living in Costa Rica written in a straight forward manner. It doesn't try to paint a pretty picture of what you want to think costa Rica is like, it tells you the way it is (which is still great!), in a easy to understand way. Definitely worth buying.

The book gives a good feel about what it is like living in Costa Rica. The style is conversational and helpful in describing the differences between life in the states vs. CR.

A very quick read but the author was trying to help you decide if you could afford to retire in Costa Rica on less than $20,000 per year. He was full of suggestions on how he did it. This is not a "story" but rather an individual who is an Ex-Pat in Costa Rica trying to help others make the decision whether or not they can retire to that country.

A very comprehensive look at the pluses and minuses of living in Costa Rica. Perhaps fewer financial details than some books, but still covers all the important aspects of living.

A quick, fun read. Much of this information could be gleaned from the various web sites and Facebook discussion groups, but well worth the few dollars to get this insight into the nuts and bolts of becoming a Costa Rican gringo.

Well written and logically organized . Presents a personal experience and the rational for the why. Good insight into potential concerns and opportunities to make a smoother move. Highly recommend this book.

I’ve read several books in Carole’s series and enjoyed them very much. I’d say this is my favorite so far.I’ve always had a fascination with the Mayan society. What you’ll read here is fascinating stuff. How did they live? What was their society like? How did they construct their pyramids? So many more questions and so many more answers abound.Among their many contributions is the concept or zero. Of something being nothing. They mapped the skies with telescopes. They even performed brain surgery. This is just of few of their contributions. A funny things is, despite all of this, they never discovered the use of the wheel. I thought that was so odd. All that knowledge and they missed the wheel. Now I wonder how did they build their cities and pyramids.Learn about famous Mayans and more with the wonderful glossary provided at the back of the book. I found it handy and fun to be able to correctly pronounce words and get a better grasp of what they meant. I was thrilled by the wealth of information gleaned from these pages.Welcome to Carole’s Mayan Empire. Read about many amazing things and let your eyes wander over the colorful illustrations. Carole's book accurately describes the evolution of Mayan culture. The author shows how the Mayans carved history into stone. There are considerable descriptions of the countryside including the Yucatan Peninsula, trade routes, plazas, ballcourts and markets.The Mayans were great hunters of animals like turkeys and deer. The people ate foods like maize and corn. The kingdom consisted of royalty like the king, the priesthood, merchants, laborers and peasants. Famous people included Itzamn- a Mayan warrior and leader. There are wonderful illustrations of the Mayan countryside by Paula Tabor.Overall, "If You Were Me and Lived In...the Mayan Empire" is a wonderful introduction to a fantastic component of our global culture. The book is written simply with many beautiful illustrations to teach young children the fundamentals of Mayan life, arts and crafts, food and popular historical sites like the Yucatan Peninsula. Carole's book would be very helpful for students from the 3rd grade onward. In addition, this book on the particulars of Mayan culture would be excellent for use during periodic readings by a professional librarian.

This historical story of a once thriving nation, which can be traced back to 1800 BC... Just imagine if you had lived then, you might have been born around 572 BC! The amazing thing was that they wrote their own history from the very beginning and produced magnificent architectural buildings well before they were seen in the Americas...Carole Roman, with the illustrated help by Paula Tabor, has provided us with over 50 pages of intensive historical data and paintings that beautifully present children, and adults, with a comprehensive study of the Mayan Empire. Life was hard and women worked constantly to provide food and clothing for the family. Men and boys would hunt for food, including turkey, deer, iguanas, et.al., but they had no knives so used stones and flint as their sharp-edge tools. Every part of the animals were used, not only for food, but for clothing, etc.Each home had a shrine to their god and then the day began to do the daily work...giving a share to the king first and then using the rest of your goods in support of your family.It was interesting to see how much of their daily living is still similar to today's life...including, for women, to wear jewelry and make their own makeup to color their cheeks, although I admit to being shocked when I learned that they purposefully changed physical characteristics of their children in order to enhance what they considered beautiful... Even more bizarre were what they did to teeth...Whew!All in all, I was happy to learn about it all, but glad I'm living during the time we are...There is a special section of contributions of the Mayan which adds greatly to the value of this early society... Learning about this Empire certainly spotlights how much we have learned from the past...and how much of our daily activities lead forward to the future... I have loved reviewing these books for Roman! I enjoy learning about new places myself. This one however, I liked to learn about it, but am so thankful I didn't live during this time.These are such fun books for kids. They explore different cultures. They get to learn the terms that were used during that time, the writing, and customs, all such great things for children to be exposed to.I was a little horrified in this book with some of the practises that the Mayans had...shaping babies heads.....it was definitely one of the more interesting books I have read of Roman's.I love being exposed to new things, and this children's book taught me a lot of new things. And as you might expect, the resulting collection is a wonderful read, giving you both a sense of Bradbury's wide range - with stories both optimistic and chilling, both realistic and futuristic, both whimsical and horrifying - and his fixations and tropes, whether that be stories about a small pub in Ireland, men named Douglas, great authors of the fantastic, or his stand-in for a prototypical American town, here named Green Town. More than that, reading this anthology of stories, which doesn't hew to a time period like one of his published collections normally would, allows you to see Bradbury's prose as it developed and changed over time. I've made the comment in the past that Bradbury was a fairly simple writer, and while that's true in some ways, there's little denying that he's capable of much more, something that especially shines in his tales of Dublin life and the playful prose that he brings to bear on these passages. Moreover, look at the impact he can bring out in a single sentence - look, for instance, at the final sentence of "The Whole Town's Sleeping", which ends the story on a perfectly chilling note without going very far at all. Or look at the wonder that Bradbury subtly weaves into "And the Moon Be Still as Bright", the tale of a man horrified by the boorish behavior of the men with whom he finds himself exploring the utterly alien world of Mars. Sometimes, he can be hilarious, like his satirical look at trendsetters, "The Watchful Poker Chip of H. Matisse"; other times, as with "Zero Hour", he slowly undermines his usual small-town optimism to unnerving effect. But most often, as with the surprisingly moving "Toynbee Convector", Bradbury inspires, battling against his own grim worries for humanity and the present to try to find hope - a quality that infuses so many of his stories, and one that sets him apart from many science-fiction authors. Bradbury may be capable of chilling darkness, but you'd never consider him a purveyor of darkness or horrific tales. He's a man who loves humanity, even as he worries for it, and finds the humor and warmth in more situations than most authors ever would. And his stories are always, forever, and inescapably human to their core, leaving me as a reader moved by his deeply thoughtful spirit and keen observation, and in awe of his immense talent, range, ability, and gift for spinning tales.

The idea that a man, minding his own business, was an oddity and should be investigated by the cop on the beat gave him the story. But it eventually led to his masterpiece "Fahrenheit 451."Bradbury has been filmed but really, to appreciate his work, it should be read, or listened to. It's unique in the beauty of the writing for its own sake, and here are 100 stories--and that's a lot of stories. I wasn't aware that Bradbury wrote this many short works and I'm glad to have this Kindle book to savor them.

We have really enjoyed the stories in this series, and appreciate the friendships and characters she has created. These are more everyday stories, rather than focusing on Olympic hopefuls. The conflict is minimal, and the coaches are supportive, which paints things as a little rosy compared to real life.My issue with this series is the number of typos in the books. As we read them together, I have had to correct a sentence or the grammar in a section in order to make sure my daughter is hearing the correct language and grammar. They are self published, which I understand, but I hope that if she continues writing this series, a proofreader is consulted prior to publication. I have found issues in each of the books, and as a professional proofreader, I can’t help but find these distracting and unprofessional. We are excited for the series to continue, and anxiously await the next in the series.

Granddaughter is a gymnast and enjoys reading these books.
