I bought both the Fodor's and the Rick Steves' books, and both are helpful in different ways. I learned more history and background from Fodor's that helped us decide how to spend our time since we have a full week. It is quite complete and detailed. Yet I loved the travel tips and streetwise orientation provided by Rock Steves. Overall Fodor's is a great learning tool.

Excellent book! First time visiting Barcelona and this book was a must have. Managed to see all the highlights of the city in four days thanks to the advance planning we were able to do with this book.

Solid book. I love Rick Steves books but he tends to favor boutique hotels. Fodors uses larger hotels. All in all a solid book for Barcelona visitors. Wish it included more for those departing Barcelona on a cruise.

This book fills the bill as far as a serious visitor to the city is concerned.It is written with easy to follow guides,and makes itinerary programming simple and straightforward.The illustrations note all the main attractions for the city,as well the highlights of Catalonia and Bilbao are both instructive and easy to follow.It gives a comprehensive view of the city for both the entertainment and eating and entertainment needs.The suburbs are also covered,again in such a way that it would be interesting to track around them as a one or two day excursion.There is just so much to see and do here and this is one book that caters for both.

I haven't used Fodor's in the past and I won't buy another travel guide from them. The book is layed out pretty well but was not very useful. I didn't use it to pick out a hotel so I can't speak to that section but used it heavily to find places to eat. They list a piaya place and in the description say it has some of the best piaya in town. It was some of the worst I've ever had and was on of those super touristy restaurants. We also used the map to find a restaurant Pla (recommended by our hotel) and found that it was not on the exact street the restaurant is showed on the map. The map was missing many streets in the Bari Gothic area which made it very hard to navigate. It also listed the Picasso museum as at top 10 thing to do and we were extremely disappointed in it. That is not the fault of the book but I certainly wouldn't list it in the top 10. Overall I will go back to the Let's Go or other books in the future, they have much better food and attraction information.

The supposed authority on foreign travel; but current 2013 edition is already out-of-date. We visited Barcelona in Apriland many of the restaurants listed were either out of business or had moved locations,,,creating some hectic last-minute dinner plans. One night we ventured over to a 4-star recommended eatery, only to find the place shuttered behind a metal gate. The hotel listings are much more precise. Perhaps Barcelona has a very dynamic, active and ever-changing restaurant scene. We also wrote Fodor's pointing out our concerns.

It had been awhile since i bought a travel book as I was relying on the internet mostly. I found the fodor's book to be really useful. Surprisingly good restaurant reviews in Barcelona. I think this is absolutely worth buying if you head to Barcelona.

Haven’t used it yet so can’t rate it accurately but looks durable and wanted it detailed with sites and streetsSomeone else might find it too large to be practical to take

Aaron Copeland is, of course, one of the greatest American composers. His input about music is scholarly and welcome. He does not lose a layman in technical jargon, music notation, or advanced music theory. For that I am grateful. The book introduces music and its structures in a steady progression. In the end I became lost. But I hung in there until the end. I think the subject really does need a format like Bernstein's Young People's Concerts where you hear a sample of the items they are discussing. But, for a book, this one is pretty good. I especially like the sectionwhere he discusses composition using the varied characteristics of the orchestra.

I am surprised it took me so long to discover this book, as it is so well written and so useful for better understanding the ways to enjoy concert music. I really did not know Copland was so articulate and good at writing. I can perceive a successful effort on his part in order to clearly explain something as abstract as music.This is not a book that will provide the reader with all that is needed to completely own this art form. However, it is a book that should be read by anyone that intends to grasp more enjoyment out of serious concert music. His point of view on many aspects of the music appreciation practice are very valuable. Throughout his discussion, he manages to present many useful tips that help the reader to better concentrate on what is important on any piece.In his book, Copland mentions many examples of pieces to make his point, and I guess one has to be familiar with those works in order to get it. However, here and there I found mentions of examples for which I am not familiar with, and even then, I could very well understand what he was trying to say.He does not assume that the reader is very knowledgeable about music and at the same time, he does not write as if the reader was stupid, as some of the books from the series “…For Dummies” series do.I highly recommend this book to better learn about appreciating music from the humble words of a great composer who is caring enough to make his reading enjoyable.

This is a TERRIFIC book about music for music laypeople -- those of us who love music but don't know much about it, who want to learn more in order to enjoy it more. There is lots and lots written about music history, what composer wrote when and who influenced whom. But there isn't that much that I have found about the music itself which really helps me understand what is going on in a particular piece.Copland does this, by taking the reader through the building blocks of music. He starts with what he calls the four elements: rhythm, melody, harmony and tone color, Then he proceeds to musical texture, to musical structure, and then to five fundamental forms: sectional, variational, fugal, sonata, and free. After this, he concludes with brief surveys of opera, film music, and what was then contemporary serious music. Each chapter is followed with a list of suggested pieces of music to listen to.The book's advanced age has remarkably little impact on its usefulness, except for the fact that the "listening lists" refer to old recordings. The book first appeared in 1939 and was revised in 1957; the Signet edition that I read has a short chapter on music since Copland. Copland was a teacher of music as well as a composer, and it shows -- I would love to take a class for which this was the text.This book does, however, demand lots of effort, and lots of listening, at least for us "I don't know much about music, but I know what I like" types. What Copland wants the listener to do is go beyond pure sensuous enjoyment and use his or her brain to follow the music as it unfolds -- to listen, not just hear. Doing this requires listening again and again to pieces he discusses.Like some other reviewers, I wish very much that some kind person would put out a CD (or set up a website) with the specific passages Copland cites, as well as his broader listening list. Even without this, however, I have learned a great deal from this book. I expect to learn more, since I will be reading again and again as I listen.I doubt that the book would be nearly so useful to people who already know a lot about how music works, but for the groundlings, Copland's book is masterful

Music people either love or hate this book. I've never met anyone who is ambivalent to it, or "kind of" likes it or doesn't like it. I fall into the camp of loving it. I have a million years of musical experience and degrees, but this book makes "intelligent" music more accessible to the lay person. I haven't read it in a few years, but I started it again today and it's just as I remembered it: informative and interesting.

Recommended by a friend, this is a very clear, easy to follow book for anyone who likes or loves classical music and wants to get even more enjoyment out of it.As a musician myself it is very interesting to hear one of America's finest composers talk about music in a way that demystifies the listening process. To paraphrase Mr. Copland, people have no trouble going to the theater and then discussing how they felt about the performance with little or no background in the dramatic arts, yet people who go to classical music concerts are not sure they are qualified or educated enough about music to "understand" or form and opinion about it.This book teaches the reader that "I don't know anything about music" doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. By applying the information in this book one can potentially learn to hear more by becoming an active listener, which in turn increases understanding and enjoyment.

Ever since I took a Music Appreciation course at a community college in my home town back in the Summer of 1967, I have been fascinated with classical music. I still refer to the text book today from time to time. Aaron Copland's book really gets into the nuts and bolts of how music is created for us laymen. Sam S. Souryal is Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice and former Assistant Dean at the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University. I needed this book for a class, as a criminal justice major and police officer I was highly disappointed by the bias and anti-police sediments in this book. over all got an A in the class.

THIS CLASS WAS CANCEL SO I DIDN'T HAVE TO USE THIS BOOK.

Great cases to analyze.

This book is positively awful. First off, I find it ironic that a professor of ethics can force students to buy his book for his class. Second, the book is written by a self-important and pompous person and is overly cluttered with flowery terms. The book could be cut by half if it wasn't written in hyperbole and rife with ridiculous and unnecessary metaphors. I pity you if you're like me and forced to buy or rent.

This book covers many issues including cultural diversity, moral character, decision making, virtues, ethical values and behavior, race, democracy, integrity, policing, perceptions, egoism, law, free will, corrections, etc. It is a good book to read for Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement professional as well as lawyers. The book covers the works of many different philosohers through the ages including The Stoics Epictetus, Epicurus, Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Saint Augustine, Kant, etc. It focuses on their writings regarding most of all the issues listed above. I think this book is a nice adjunct or supplement to traditional education and training in those relavent fields.

About the Author

Otto L. Bettmann is the founder of the famed Bettmann Archive in New York, one of the world’s great picture libraries. Its resources, some three million prints and photographs, are used all over the world by publishers, educators, ad men and the audio-visual media.Expelled during the Nazi regime from his post as Curator of Rare Books at the Prussian State Art Library in Berlin, Dr. Bettmann came to America in 1935 where he established the Archive and became widely known as a graphic historian. Among his previous publications are As We Were: Family Life in America, A Pictorial History of Medicine, Our Literary Heritage (with Van Wyck Brooks) and The Bettmann Portable Archive. Dr. Bettmann died in 1998.

And it wasn't just horse manure: "The pig in the city was a paradox---an element of rural culture transposed to urban life. Pigs roamed the streets rooting for food, the stink from their wastes poisoning the air. Because they ate garbage, the pigs were tolerated to a degree in the absence of adequate sanitation facilities. ..."Don't think that by just staying off the streets you could avoid it : "During dry spells the pounding traffic refined the manure to dust, which blew 'from the pavement as a sharp, piercing powder, to cover our clothes, ruin our furniture and blow up our nostrils.'"But perhaps you feel that this was mitigated by the availability of wonderful "organic" meat and produce; after all, chemical fertilizers and pesticides were virtually unknown in those days. "In the absence of electric refrigeration, perishable goods were subject to the whims of the weather. Meat and fowl for sale were simply hung on racks or placed on market counters. Changed my life back when I read it in the mid-1980s and even more relevant now that so much of politics is driven by this belief that the old days were the best. They were very, very different than they are perceived today, and were very, very awful in many ways. Lest you think regulations on food safety, traffic, water, labor and more are onerous government intrusion, get a copy of this and ask if you want to live in that sort of world instead.Delightfully written, and snack sized for anyone. A series of chapters with little 1-2 page articles (and being Mr Bettmann of the actual Bettmann Archives, illustrated with contemporary examples supporting the text) on each topic. Great bed-time reading for anyone. Happy dreams!

We often hear from conservatives that we would be better off if we went back in time but they conveniently leave out the facts. There's not really much about the past that we really want to live with today. Whether from the last century or this one or even longer ago, today might not look like what we hoped but dang, the past is a lot worse.Along with well researched facts, the black and white period illustrations are a treasure in themselves.Disease, filth, grinding poverty, mind numbing child abuse, animal cruelty and on and on. Then as now, the ultra wealthy call the shots and the rest of us their leftovers.

The kind of stuff which gets omitted from the history books as too humdrum, but which is the background necessary to understand much of what happened. Especially important today when you have many conservatives portraying the late 19th/early 20th century as a golden age to which we should return. The section on the widespread sale of disease contaminated milk,, for example, shows why regulation is necessary and shows up the falsity of arguments against regulation which are still made today. (The regulation of the dairy industry did NOT destroy it; it simply removed the economic advantage of unprincipled dairy owners over those who tried to produce a quality product.)

This book is so much fun! Movies and television gloss over all kinds of gross things people really had to live with in the past, like piles of horse poop and slop piled on the sidewalks and streets during the late 19th century. This book is well worth tracking down from the third parties, whatever condition. It's hilarious.

This book is chock full of wonderful period illustrations from the 1800s, depicting life in America. Each chapter is a quick read but reveals little-known details about the nitty-gritty of life for city dwellers as well as those in the glorified country. Rips the lid off day-to-day living "back then" so one appreciates the quality of life NOW.

This book features a great number of drawings from the Bettmann archive, and brief synopses in an ordered presentation of themes within the pictorial histories. I liked the book, it's a great browsing type of read.It's a bit of a tease though, not going into any depth on any particular subject that is brought up. Shame that. I docked it one star for being such a tease. But it does include a complete bibliography and annotations to the sources used, which allow further in-depth research.

Having been raised in rural America in the 1940's by Grandparents, I have always had at least a foot in the world into which they were born and raised. To have a wonderful guide into the world of the not so distant past has amplified what I had received from my elder-folk. Reading, has made me temper any complaints that on occasion filter to the surface. How my Grandparents survived to be able to raise me is a wonder. They must have been a forgiving group. I understood why my Grandfather had nothing but praise for the two Roosevelts. Current movements in government and business seem to lurk in the background as I read as well. Are we marching into the future backwards?

I wanted a St. Patrick's Day story that was not overly dark, taught a lesson of value, and felt Irish. This story was the only one we liked that met all of those requirements. A lazy girl is not taking care of her elderly mom/grandma so she catches a leprechaun. The leprechaun trickily gets her to do all of her chores so they have a better life without ever finding the pot of gold. The story basically teaches that instead of complaining about your life, get up and work, then your life will be better. The application I tell kids is that it takes more energy and time to avoid doing their chores, then just doing them, plus they can enjoy the fruits of their toils and get back to playing faster. Other applications you can discuss are: love is not magic happy ever after - it takes hard work, buying lottery tickets or gambling are not the answer to your life - you are better off working hard and saving that money, and work hard in school so that you can have a better job. So this book actually can be used to leap into a lot of discussion over the value of work, an education, and caring for others.

I had purchased several books with "leprechaun" or "Irish" themes to share with my grandchildren around St. Patrick's Day. The storyline of this book was fun and held their attention, as this lazy girl, Ninny Nanny, and her Grandma are down to eating "rainwater soup" due to Ninny Nanny's unwillingness to do her chores. The one thing she is willing to work at is finding a leprechaun, because then he would have to tell them where his gold is hidden and they would be rich. Surprisingly, she stumbles upon one of the little men and she and Gram tie him, neck high, in a potato sack. He cleverly keeps Ninny Nanny busy looking for the gold as she, unwittingly, is accomplishing the badly needed chores around the place. In the end the leprechaun gets the best of them, but they have the fruits of Ninny Nanny's labors and are no longer destitute. An entertaining "wee folk" story that incorporates a moral as to the value of work without sounding preachy. You could use the book any time of the year to subtly encourage getting chores done, because there is no mention of the St. Patrick's Day holiday in the story.The purchase I initially made was a used copy of the original edition. In that volume the art is all sepia-toned, except for the clothing of the leprechaun, which is very green. It is a clever approach, but I almost had the feeling that I was trying to get kids of this generation to sit down and watch a black and white movie. Once they were interested in the story it went fine, but at first they were hesitant. So when I saw that they had republished it with full-color illustrations I had to buy another copy. Lecia Balian has stayed true to her mother, Lorna's, original illustrations, she has just put in lush color, which gives a much richer, Irish countryside feel to the book. As another reviewer stated, there are a few places where the background detail seems almost photographic (maybe computer generated ?), and, in fact, detail has been heightened in many of the background scenes. This new edition is a visual feast and I am glad I purchased this book again.

My favorite Irish tale with a lesson for young children. Love the colorful language. I was totally surprised when I opened the book and saw the colored illustrations. Apparently Lorna Balian's daughter painted in the illustrations and had it republished. Original illustrations were mostly mono-colored shading with specific story elements painted more colorfully....a trade mark of Lorna Balian's picture books.

An old favorite. Read to your students or children with an Irish lilt in your voice.

Balian has the gift of writing that enables you to read this in a passable Irish accent. It was one of my favorite books to read to second-graders around St. Patrick's day when I was a school librarian. The illustrations add to the humor of the story which has a delightfully cheeky female out-matched (as always in Irish tales) by the leprechaun.

One of my favorite books for my granddaughters. Be sure you throw in a little Irish accent when you share it.

As a librarian, I must say that this is my hands down all-time favorite St. Patrick's Day book! It is a very entertaining story with a surprise twist at the end! Even my Kindergarten classes love it!!

I always liked this story as a kid, and so does our three year old. Tells how putting in the work brings reward.
